Question How do you modify your routine for the hot spring/summer months?

I've recently been adding more outdoor walks to my routine. The weather isn't bad now, but it will be stinkin' hot soon.

I'm not a generally morning exerciser. During the lockdown, my workouts were getting later and later in the day. Almost 4 p.m. sometimes.

I will have to get going very early in the a.m. to get walks in. It's a big change!

How do you modify your routine for the hot weather?

I struggle with this too. I will need to start our morning walks much earlier than the 10:00 or so it has become! Plus last summer most of my runs were 2 miles or less and I could tolerate that short a time in the afternoon but I won't be able to handle longer runs in summer afternoon heat.

You don't have to be fast, just keep moving forward.

Well my suggestion would be to start earlier in the day. I walk daily, leaving at 5:45 each morning. And honestly the bigger issue for me is the winter months mostly because it is colder, and the sun is not up at 5:45 a.m, and it's hard to see the ice. I also walk later in the evenings spring, summer and fall so I guess I would suggest that. I prefer being outside than inside so I am not much help with suggestions. I also do my Essentrics/yoga etc before my morning walks when it's cooler. I avoid running my AC as much as possible.

So sorry...I am no help at all. Good luck. I will say this, on my early morning walks, I see some amazing sunrises. I also pick up the newspapers on one side of the street for about the first 4 blocks. I started this during Covid lockdown just to brighten folks day and I never stopped. It makes me feel good that on the cold wet days, folks can open their doors and their newspaper is on their porch.

I usually either work out at night or early in the morning. If I just can't get in those peak cooler weather times then I modify as follows:

(1) Walking or dance workouts. I can do some step if I know it's not high impact, too fast, or terribly sweaty. Think Evolution, Jenny Ford, Kathy Smith, Rob Glick, earlier Cathe. Do not think Amy Bento, Seasun Zieger, Christi Taylor, mid-later Cathe.
(2) Easier or shorter weight workouts that have as little cardio involved as possible. So no PHA or metabolic training. I like to stick to Kathy Smith, Margaret Richard, or KCM. I keep my Cathe and high sweat inducing workout for winter.

Wear less clothes and move my yoga mat to the back patio.

This has been an issue for me as well. I moved to California last year and feel that I just do not like outdoor activity in the afternoon or evening. There is not alot of shade. And my garage which is where I usually do cardio is still sweltering in the evening.
My solution is to try to get out early for my hiking and running and to try to take advantage of the marine layer if there is any. In the evening I can go outside and use my shaded lean to area as it cools down in the evening. The disadvantage with this is I have to lug all my stuff to the back yard and it is noisy because I live by the free way. I have a small bedroom to do weights and yoga but that is not wonderful because it is very small.
Hate to say it but except for the wonderful state parks here I am not digging it! I miss the East Coast with the big shade trees and my basement work out area.

I exercise in my basement so no real change. It’s insulated well so not too dramatic a temp change between seasons. In the summer, I do make sure to have more water available during workouts. That is the most noticeable thing between warmer and colder months - I know I need more water breaks.

I totally agree with the basement part. I used to workout in my basement all the time. I have never lived without a basement. My current place was built in 1865 and it has a basement. I honestly rather not workout down there. Who knows what is lurking in those walls.

Not all would understand the blessings of the marine layer. We get it occasionally here and it is such a relief.

After June, it is rare. Then, one has to do whatever needs to be done well before noon. Or, before ten, really.
