I'm sorry to hear about your mom's passing.

On a more positive note, I'm so happy (and envious in a good way) that you will hopefully see a menopause specialist soon. I wish that we had options where I live, but none. Nothing. I need to wait until we can travel again. I don't know when that will be.

This type of thing drives me nuts. How stupid can they be? That's like what Hot & Flashy said in one of her videos about how insurance covers Viagra, but not HRT.

This is one of my favorite videos, among many.

Managing Your Menopause With a Gynecologic Menopause Specialist

I love what she says here:

The difference between a GP and a menopause specialist is as significant as the difference between a skateboard and an airplane when it comes to managing your menopause.

In medical school, we only get 1 hour of education on menopause. That's ALL GPs ever get. Gynecologists study nothing but women's health for 4 years after medical school. And the menopause specialists study menopause in great depth and keep up with all the current data.

If there's any way for you to see a menopause specialist, do so.

If you live in North America, you might have a menopause specialist near you. Here's how you can find one:

Go to www.menopause.org (North American Menopause Society).
Click on the tab "For Women."
Click on the drop-down menu item "Find a Menopause Practitioner."
Put in your zip code.
All the menopause specialists near you will pop up.

I wish it were that simple.

Living where I do, yes, there is a menopause specialist near me, but I quit trying to deal with her, her schedule, and her office staff, and just found an OB-GYN nearby.

IMO, it's better to have a doctor whose office hours are sufficient enough that you have some hope of seeing them when you need to.

The specialists might well be great, but if there's only one within at least a two hundred mile radius and her practice is actually focused on other things (births, surgeries and weight management), odds are you might struggle to be taken seriously if all you need is help managing your hormones.

Not trying to be a downer, just hoping that my experience can help somebody else manage their own expectations more realistically.

On the plus side, I'm planning to move and realized that there are THREE menopause specialists near where I'm planning to move. Having a range of choices will make for a nice change.
