Exercising with a fractured foot

This morning as I was coming downstairs, I missed the last step and did not land well. My feet bothered me all day, so I finally went to the podiatrist to get x-rays and see what kind of damage I'd done. I have fractured my fifth metatarsal on my right foot and am wearing a boot. I'm not to take it off, not even to sleep.

I have Margaret Richard's Getting Better, but what else can I do to keep from turning to mush? I usually lift pretty heavy, but I don't know how to do that while hobbling around, even for upper body. And I can't think of any cardio I can do.

Has anyone worked with an injury like this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I feel for you! I fractured my fifth metatarsal several years ago missing a step on a sailboat. I was in a boot for about 5 weeks. I did Toning based mat workouts - Pilates, yoga, upper body stuff, and seated & floor stretches. I also went to the pool as soon as I could & swam lengths with hand paddles & a pull buoy between my legs for cardio & to work my upper body.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I broke my sesamoid bone on the ball of my foot several years ago and had to wear a boot. I used the elliptical for cardio while wearing the boot. I was able to do upper body strength, but I am pretty sure I was unable to do lower body (just because the boot was so awkward.

When I broke my foot, I started out using boxing workouts while seated.

I'm sorry about your injury and hope you heal well!

I could second Pam's post! Same here when I also fractured the 5th metatarsal. Lost of mat work, upper body and swimming. I also started cycling for a bit when my doctor cleared me. Take good care!!

Lots of good suggestions, but I’m going to add please give yourself some time to heal. I broke my knee last year and at first I was gung ho that I wouldn’t miss my workouts. I was going to do upper body. Well it’s hard enough to do every day things when you are injured. Rest might help you heal faster.

Thanks for all the well wishes and suggestions. Wow, Sherry, that's a lot of links. Thank you!

I feel so silly. I've gone up and down these steps daily for nine years. I suppose I'm lucky I didn't break both feet, as both of them did hurt.

Thanks again, everyone, and Hi, Kay!

Sorry about your injury!

As recommended above, Pahla Bowers has some seated workouts that are harder than you might guess:

Feel better soon!
