Help Me Help My Mom. YouTube Channels for Her?

My mom is 83. Recently, she has had some health issues and has had a lot of pain. It's stuff like osteo arthritis and a boil on her foot. She's improving and is feeling well, but needs some gentle exercise. She tried going back to the YMCA, but the options there are too much for her. She's looking for gentle exercise and I, a 20-year VF veteran, told her I'd research options. I will do that myself, of course, but figured my first top should be here.

I'm looking for YouTube channels that have easy exercise videos - seated, gentle, for seniors, etc. She can watch YouTube on her TV and that seems like the best option. DVDs are possible as well. She needs some cardio and strength stretch - standard exercise options.

She has bad feet and uses a cane, so cardio options need to be safe ones for her. And her low back is the source of most of her osteo arthritis pain, so things like knee lifts might not be the best thing for her.

Any suggestions?

Silver and Fit

The Silver and Fit channel has tons of options for older beginners, including seated exercises, and lots of different styles of workouts to choose from.

I hope your mom finds something she enjoys doing, Laura!

I would start with gentle yoga to get her moving. She may also just like walking with friends/neighbors for the social aspect. Or swimming if that's her thing.

Gosh! Silver & Fit has tons of chair beginner workouts - I haven't done any of them, so you might want to preview them first:

I am 72 with problems similar to your mother. A lot of senior programs were too hard for me and I was using Cathe , and all advanced wokouts for a long time before the arthritis progressed in my hands knees and spine.

I would recommend Sherry Zak Morris at yoga vista tv.com Her chair workouts for senior and yoga dances are so uplifting and effective and doable for me. I can do two a day and feel really good and workout tomorrow. She has a lot of other instructors on her site and I like Tatis Cervanantes-Aiken. Your mom will be so happy to do these and fun as well. The site has a 7 day free trial and is also very affordable to join, some on you tube(I think)
These saved me after my fall. You can also still get some dvds on eBay.There are two instructors on eBay from australia, Third age fitness. I bought some of their workouts and I think they have some on youtube. . They have a 7 day free trial on their site as well, and it is too expensive to ship the dvds unless you buy a minimum to get free shipping.

readily available dvds that I used a lot are
Chair Dancing Simply Stretch-you "run"your feet between stretches (if you can) and bump up you circulation
Chair dancing -Chair Yoga -very simple, easy to follow, no whoo

Gentle Fitness with Catherine McRae-you can find this dvd, but it is also free on her site

one more I love =Gentle chair yoga with Paula Montalvo on Sherry Zak Morris site and sometimes on eBay. she is well into her 80's and I Love this workout for seniors. best ever for your Mom

I was surprised on little I could do, having been an advanced exerciser. but I like and learned to accept these gentle workouts and did two a day .
I could work on the floor and for that I recommend Jane Adams Gentle Yoga. Her Yoga for seniors chair workout is also good.

best to you and your MOM

Check to see if you mother's Medicare coverage includes Silver Sneakers. Silver Sneakers now offer online exercise classes so you don't necessarily have to go to a gym.

Thanks so much for all the recommendations! I appreciate the time you took and the ideas. I'm also sure that Mom will tell me to pass along her thanks as well.

I sent her a first list of ideas, including some of the options above, last night. I told her I was asking VFers and was sure that there would be a second list.
