Mansfield Park - I can take it or leave it.
But I really like S&S, Persuasion and Emma. (And P&P, of course.)

My first Jane Austen was Emma, in college. I loved it. That was for a 19th century British literature class and I loved everything we read.

Yes, exactly! It's too bad most high school students can't really appreciate the literature they are assigned at that age - they just aren't ready for it yet and it's so different to read those same books as an adult.

I don't follow this thread bc I don't get to read very often but I'm giving a shameless plug (I hope that's okay to do here) for my friend's books! They are more sci-fi/fantasy type and available on Amazon. Search for Claudia Blood. Thank you!

I also enjoyed the James Herriot books. I'm looking forward to watching Season 2 of All Creatures Great and Small on PBS.

I started Truth & Beauty: A Friendship by Ann Patchett but bailed because it was boring and depressing.

I got several chapters in to Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon but bailed on that one too.

I just started A Wanted Man by Lee Child.

I do think some books get better as we get older, because we see the goings on from such a different perspective.

Persuasion, in particular.

I do confess that Emma is my least favorite, don't even like any of the movies.

One thing I like about them, though, is that I can stop and start reading them at any point, and still know where I am in the story. I love to re-read books, and find these are especially good for that. Stuff I never noticed pops up all the time.

Just finished Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber to fulfill a "figure out your wheelhouse" prompt for a reading challenge (one of mine is magical cooking/baking). It was fine--I liked the relationships and the small town, and the magical baking part was only one element of the story, not the main focus. However, one of the main characters had a change of heart that was too abrupt to be realistic, and a lot of questions were left wide open at the end.

Kate, this made me smile - I think this happens all too often in novels!

You all will be happy to hear that I did start Sense and Sensibility yesterday.

Very happy to hear that, Beth. I finished The Master Butchers Singing Club and started The Book of Magic by Alice Hoffman.

Vantreesta - thank you I will check her out.

Right now I'm reading Alice Hoffman's Magic Lessons which is a prequel to the Rules of Magic. I'm enjoying it but it is a slower read for me, not for any reason in particular, I think I just read Alice's books more slowly in general.

I do have next up V.E. Schwab - The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.

Question - do you guys still buy/keep books? I do almost all of my reading on my Kindle these days - it is just easier on the eyes and (I have a paper white) but we still have a fairly large collection of books at home. We are thinking about seriously cutting our collection of paper books down - mostly for space reasons and also preparing for our future move several years down the road when we retire and probably downsize. There are some I will certainly save for sentimental and other reasons. What do you guys do?

If you visit a book sale do you end up keeping the book or donating it back?

Take care,

Donna
