Workout Videos That Helped You With Pain and/or Specific Functional Fitness Issues

What workouts have reduced a chronic pain for you, and/or improved your ability to move?

I was inspired to post this question after my workout this morning did a great thing for me, so here is my story:

This morning, the first part of the second half of Trish Muse’s Ab Attack reduced my SI joint pain by at least 80%.

My pain is on the right side. For years I haven’t been able to lift my left leg high enough, while standing on the right leg and holding open a skirt or pants, to get that left leg inserted into the opening. There is pain on the right to stop me, but it also seems like I just can’t do the move even if I ignore the pain. Note that I can stretch my left hip by using my hands to pull my knee to my chest just fine, and I can do knee-ups since there is momentum to assist. It is the slow/controlled/balance move that I haven’t been able to do.

I frequently attempt to put the left leg in after putting the right leg in, apparently because I’m either a masochist or a really big fan of Hokey Pokey. This morning, about 45 minutes after my “visit” with Trish, I stood on my right leg as I easily lifted my left leg and inserted it into my left pant leg. I was a bit shocked.

Trish didn’t give me the greatest form tips, but I had learned a lot from other instructors over the years so I knew how to do the moves well.

Another great assist happened for me with Sara Ivanhoe The Joy of Yoga. Years ago I had issues turning my head to the left. This was a chronic thing that happened after a neck/upper back injury that landed me in the hospital, and that got worse a few years later with a whiplash injury when I got rear-ended. My doctor (not Physical Therapist) told me to turn my head left to stretch my neck and upper back every day, but that made my blood pressure drop to near the pass-out zone so I gave that up quickly. One day I finally decided to do The Joy of Yoga, didn't pay attention to anything but doing what Sara told me to do, and my neck/back issues were amazingly different once that workout was over.

My "Sara Fix" stayed put with just one workout - - and I wouldn't believe this myself if it hadn't happened to me. Maybe something out of place popped back into place I don't expect that my "Trish Fix" is permanent, but so far the pain reduction has lasted 4 hours.

I did serious, deep spring cleaning this weekend. It forced me to contort my body, with arms stretched, to reach seldom seen or thought of places. I had to lift and move furniture. I swept, vacuumed, mopped. I dusted and polished (often on my knees, a couple of times on my stomach). I had to reach way up over my head and forward to get to cupboards that should NEVER be placed that high (I'm 5'7"+, so if I can't reach it, it's too high!). I had to lift items weighing between 10 & 20 lbs into those cupboards. I hauled books from one room to the next, bookcases, too.

I was able to do everything with ease and no DOMS the next day. I'm 64. I believe I was able to do this because of: T-Tapp, Classical Stretch/Essentrics, and my new-found (only the past year and a half) love, Pietra Fitness.

I do "The Joy of Yoga" every Saturday! I honestly thought I was the only one who still used it!

The RehabZone workout set is something I reach for when I'm feeling beat up or overly sore.

in the thread linked below, floorwork helped remove both hip and heel pain. i had been doing Margaret Richard's Home Improvement, Debbie Sieber's Firm It Up, and Patricia Friberg's The Bottom Line and A Core Defined.

I want to also add Callanetics to improve hip pain - Callan Pinkney (original or Quick Hips and Behind) also reduces my hip pain, particularly, the pretzel moves.

Classical Stretch Season 4, episodes 20 and 21 (each 24 min) permanently removed back pain (due to my own carelessness!). those 2 short segments were pretty amazing. I've also used the same episodes to remove shoulder pain I was experiencing.

I looked through the older thread and see I mentioned having hip pain and looking for floorwork suggestions. I discovered Brazil Butt Lift, specifically High & Tight, and the band work really helped strengthen and relieve pain in my hips. Floorwork with bands seems to do the trick for me, which is why I'm interested in seeing clips from Cathe's new series coming out. I have very few Cathe workous as a lot of them are too advanced for me, but this new series has me intrigued!

The Egoscue Pain Free Workout Series have been so helpful for me.

Not videos, but

I crushed my T7 vetebrae many years ago, and occasionally that part of my back will ache. Lat pulls fix it every time. It always feels fine the next day.

I had a rod inserted in my femur through my knee many years ago. Occasionally my knee will "go out." It's hard to describe, but I can't put any weight on it or it hurts really badly. Knee extensions fix it every time. It always feels fine the next day.

That's why I have a humongous machine in my dining room that lets me do those two moves.

I remember a few years back, I did step ups with heavy weights, I don't know if the step was too high, or if my weights were too heavy, I didn't feel any disconfort while doing them, but I ended with pain knees for a couple of days. During those days I got my Classical Stretch that I have just ordered during one of their big sales, and I did it right away, I kid you not, I went down to my basement to do the workout, feeling the pain in my knees while on the stairs, and when I was done, I went up pretty quicly, pain free! I just realized it after I finished climbing the stairs, I was pleasantly surprised.

ETA: the workout I did was Aging Backwards Posture and Pain Relief for Beginners, I did the whole thing.

another example just occurred to me. if you have hip issues, in the book "Cool Yoga Tricks" by Miriam Austin, she has this trick where you hang a barbell plate from your thigh using a yoga strap, your leg is resting on table. it's designed for sciatica, but it helped relieve hip pain. this is on p. 284-285.
