I'm 65 and almost 15 years past menopause. I do get hot flashes once in a while. I'll get warm at night, but very rarely the night sweats.

I do get cold in the daytime sometimes, especially my hands and feet. That got better when I went on thyroid meds.

Erica - You might consider having your thyroid levels checked at your next annual exam. Thyroid levels can affect body temperature.

Sometimes a strong cup of tea in the AM will bring on a hot flash. So, try monitoring your caffeine intake during the day.

Thank you. My TSH was normal when I had bloodwork done recently. I had some more thorough thyroid bloodwork a year or two ago and the doctor said it was fine. But I have so many symptoms of thyroid issues. I'm a mess and can't find a doctor who can help me.

, I hear you. I have some issues going on and can't find a physician who wants to help me. The best I get is "Come back when it is worse..."

Gee, thanks for nothing!!!

I'm sorry.

My family doctor sends me to specialists (she referred me to six so far!) and orders expensive and useless tests. I've only seen two of the specialists - one was great, the other was a complete quack and charged a whopping $400 for a first office visit (she told me to eat bananas for protein - bananas!!??). There's no way I'm seeing six specialists. I need one knowledgeable and thorough doctor to spend some time with me and figure out what's going on.

Erica, like Diana, I'll be 53 in April. Here's where I am at right now:
  • last period was mid-July
  • have been having mild but many different symptoms over the past few months, including night sweats, some hot flashes*, nausea, lightheadedness, etc.
  • blood tests performed with my recent GYN exams at the end of April were found to be "consistent with being post-menopausal" (based on FSH and estradiol tests)
*Note that I did start taking a supplement that helped with my (mild) hot flashes; PM me for more info.

I am meeting with my GYN again later this month to discuss med options. I'm not sure if I want to do a medicine since my symptoms are mostly mild, but they are annoying. Erica, like you, I'm usually cold all the time (I HATE air conditioning and definitely wear a sweater all summer!), so it's very strange for me to be getting too hot at night--and sometimes I still get too cold, too!

I do know that my doctor previously told me that risks of HRT meds are lower when you take them <60 years old and sooner after menopause. I often rely on my friend and co-worker for menopause info, as she is exactly 2 years older than me and about that far ahead menopause-wise. She was just telling me that although her hot flashes have mainly gone away, they still come on in times of high stress. (We didn't discuss night sweats.) She gets her GYN care through a midwife group, which sounds great.

It's very frustrating to have a doctor who minimizes your concerns. I hope you are able to access better help or otherwise find some comfort soon.

Thank you for all the information and the good wishes. I had two episodes of heavy night sweats last night, but I did eat a lot of sugar in the evening - don't know if those are connected or not.

Food certainly affects everyone differently. I've had to swap out my winter PJs for my summer ones - this has been helpful on some nights, but other nights I've wound up cold!
