Yoga dvd, yoga cd, or paper/box yoga?

Again, good morning!

For all you yoga folks, do you prefer yoga dvds, cds (audio only), or paper/box card workouts? I’d like to incorporate more yoga into my daily routine, but also want that meditative feel and it dawned on me that maybe following a paper workout might help stop the brain “noise”. I’d never do well with guided meditation…

What do you prefer?

I have used dvds and you tube for a very long time, but someone suggested that I try a yoga deck so I could use my own music. I did that recently and really enjoyed it! I put on Sting's cd "Dream of the Blue Turtles" while I did the practice I designed.

I can link the deck I bought in a second. I liked that it came with a booklet for suggested routines also.

They have it on Amazon, but since I am logged in there I am showing the link to Barnes and Noble:

I like that the cards are large enough to see easily when I spread them out.

I always use youtube or dvds, but funny enough, I usually do yoga with my eyes closed. It's only when I can't understand the cues or need a visual for alignment that I'll peek at the tv. Given this, one would think I would use yoga CDs, but I never have. I guess I'm hesitant to get a yoga CD that I'm not sure is cued well.

I have a few yoga cds, but I do not use them very often. I need to pull them back out. Thanks for the reminder.

You are welcome! I looked at a bunch on Amazon before finding this one.

I've found that whatever instructional medium I use, I've most preferred following a memorized sequence (I've even taken notes), referring as little to the medium as possible during the practice, and moving at my own pace.

(I've used guided meditation for instruction, suggestions, and other guidance--I don't otherwise prefer or use it much.)

I don’t have anything to add really, but I also used to do yoga with my eyes closed. I often wondered if that was unusual. It’s nice to know I’m not alone. Maybe some day I will start doing yoga again.

*if your goal is to incorporate more yoga, do short practices.

*if your goal is to lower head/mind noise, good guided meditation CDs that both "instruct" you and offer short practices is the way to go.

i found myself doing more yoga when i kept a few DVDs with short practices in a small container under my bed. i also kept 2 small books under the bed**. these books show all of the different poses and at the end of the book there were 2-3 practices with tiny thumbnails of someone in the pose. you could refer back to the content of the book to refresh your memory on how to do the pose very quickly since the books were high on visuals and less on text.

one meditation set I would highly recommend is by Jack Kornfield. He discusses how to quiet the mind. it discusses what to expect when beginning a meditation practice including dealing with the mind wandering. even if you're experienced, you can go back to this and still gain new insights.

follow the "meditation" tags on this thread - there are lots of replies the VFers have posted about which authors. our local library has a ton of meditation CDs that i got to try.

*both strategies profoundly complement one another!

**books: The Yoga Book by Christina Brown and 101 Essential Tips Yoga

I stream or often do my own thing. I’ve been doing yoga for decades & taught for a while so I usually know what my body needs. I used The Athlete’s Pocket Guide to Yoga as a reference when I taught. It’s a spiral bound book of yoga sequences with pictures. Here is a link, there are some used copies available.

ETA I do think that if you’re new to yoga, a visual practice you can see & hear cues is best so you develop good form. The book is strictly for sequencing & doesn’t have much instruction.
