if you don't have a slide board, you can always do valslide (VF has a number of threads on these) or gliding.
I like treads like this because I'm always looking for alternatives to work my legs. I'm a believer in maintaining circulation in this area for many reasons. I'm glad you mentioned the slide board.

OP- I came up with 2 additional activities Volleyball and Salsa dance.

I was going to suggest martial arts. The stances and kicking definitely work the lower body.

There is truly no other way around lifting/Resistance training for BUILDING muscles. I suggest plyometric
