Bought a pedometer-How many steps?

I wore the pedometer I bought (an Omron GOsmart) and I had in 5526 steps yesterday. Not what I thought I would have but then I had two home visits worth 2 hours of driving time.

What is the recommended steps per day? Is 10,000 the recommended amount per day? I don't know how I would add in when I do my recumbent bike miles?

Thanks for any input.

Kelly

Yep, generally the recommendation is a minimum of 10,000 steps per day and 15,000 if you are trying to lose weight.

Good to know! I've been shooting for between 10000-15000 per day but will now make 15000 my base.

I would recommend wearing it for a week and figuring out what your average is, then make a goal of increasing it by a certain percentage for a couple of weeks at a time till you get where you want to be. Personally, I think 15K steps can be excessive, even if you want to lose weight, depending on where you're starting from. I mean, there are only so many hours in a day!!

on edit, for the record, my average is about 10K, and I'm pretty active.

This website has some fun info. 15,000 steps a day equals two marathons a week, so that is probably too much to start off.

Slightly OT from the original post, but does any of Leslie's walks have a step count? TIA

I once wore my Go Smart and Fitbit together. The Go Smart would record somewhere around 6000 steps to the Fitbit's 10000, though I tried hard to calibrate it correctly. I don't know for sure which was the inaccurate one. Maybe both. (I've always suspected the Fitbit to be a little too sensitive)

Either way, try strapping the device on your leg for bike work if you want to count those "steps."

Wow, that's a big difference. So far, I have been checking steps to see how accurate it is and it has been pretty much right on so far.

I trust my New Lifestyles pedometer more than I trust my Fitbit Flex, but I wear both all the time. I have a desk job but workout and walk my dogs three times a day. My goal is 12000 steps a day. When I get my workout in I usually meet this goal on my pedometer but not as often on my Flex.
