Cathe Bootcamp vs PHA with cardio blasts

What is the difference in the 2 workout formats? Both have a cardio blast followed by lower body then upper body. What’s the difference in the two? Thanks!

Are you asking about Cathe live workouts or her DVDs?

I’m talking about her DVDs because that’s the format of bootcamp that her DVDs have (except the 4 day split boot camp). The new Step Boss PHA will also have cardio blasts so I’m wondering what the difference is. I don’t know if all the live bootcamps have that format too.

The Bootcamps sometimes have an ab/core segment. The format changes but it's usually cardio, lowerbody, upperbody, core, repeat.

The PHA with blasts will probably have blast, lowerbody, upperbody, repeat (I'm guessing here since this is the first time she's added blasts to a PHA dvd). The other two PHA's didn't have cardio, only alternated lower and upperbody.

Hope that helps. Cathe will probably release more information on the format of the dvds later.

Kathy

I have thought the same thing! Cathe has a Live PHA with cardio and it is the exact same format as many of her bootcamp workouts (cardio, lower, upper, repeat). I’m not complaining but I don’t see what the difference is.

Maybe the reps? I know in some bootcamps you are doing as many reps as you can for a minute. While for strength training you are doing X amount of reps.

I'm wondering if years after "bootcamp" workouts were popular, the science backing the format became more advanced (as in....the *why* as to their effectiveness) and now with that knowledge they are revamped as "PHA?"

I "think" that the PHA workouts are floor work or use the step? That's what I recall from the ones that Cathe has done. The heart rate was elevated by the movement itself. The bootcamp ones seem to include a core segment as well which could be on the floor in a prone position (and not cardio). The PHA plus blasts is the first one I recall that Cathe did that had specific segments dedicated to cardio.

I also agree with Sweet as Sugar that bootcamp segments seem to be about an activity within a specific time frame, and PHA is about a specific number of repetitions.

I like Cathe’s PHA 1 (2x not 3x) and PHA 2 () but not sure I want to do cardio blasts. Hopefully in PHA 3 she will have a premix without the blasts as my heart rate already climbs with the upper/lower format.

Yes, I agree that bootcamp workouts are usually time based exercises, i.e. do squats for a minute. Cathe's PHA are usually 12-16 reps per exercise (or side if the movement is left and right). But she will repeat the sequence again so it's really 24-32 reps per exercise.
