I think the universe or Frank is messing with me.

We moved into this house in 1997, and had the same next door neighbors since 1999. We were never close, but we gave each other baked goods for Christmas and had brief conversations many times. The husband was friendly, but the wife was always weird and standoffish.
During last year, we noticed they were leaving a lot of stuff out at the curb for people to just take, had tons of garbage and were getting their carpeting replaced and the inside painted (by the trucks in the driveway) We weren't being nosy and watching-you just couldn't help but see these things. We figured they were getting ready to move. Well, they moved and never said a word after living next door since 1999! How weird is that.

A few days before Frank passed away, he told me he had met the new neighbors when he was coming back from a walk. He always hoped that someday we would get very nice next door neighbors that we could be more friendly with. He said the wife's name was Valeria and she seemed very friendly. Frank has had a HUGE crush on Valerie Bertinelli since he was 15 years old. How weird to get a nice neighbor with a similar first name.

A few weeks ago, I just sucked it up, put on my mask and went to introduce myself and tell them what had happened. They were kind and welcoming....and the wife has long dark hair, just like Valerie Bertinelli. The universe is weird!

This morning, I went out early to the grocery store and there was a note in the door from them saying they had knocked and wanted to leave an apple crisp for us. I must have been in the basement because I can hear the door from anywhere else in the house. Frank's absolute favorite dessert was anything apple. In December, I made him an apple crisp. It was the last time I made anything with apple for him, and the ONLY time I had made an apple crisp, just because I had not felt like dealing with pie crust.

What are the odds of our neighbor making any dessert in the entire world but the exact last apple dessert I baked for Frank? It really makes you wonder! We finally have a very sweet wife living next door who bakes named nearly the same as his big crush with long dark hair and he's not here anymore......

I just went next door to pick up the apple crisp. I had not been all the way in their house before. The door to the finished basement was open, and I saw that they had framed U2 posters on the walls going down the stairs. We love U2-what are the odds of having music geek neighbors? Frank was finally going to hang up all his framed posters and album covers in that SAME spot and through our finished basement, and now we have music geek neighbors (they have seen U2 all over the world) and he is not here to hang out with them. I don't know if this is bizarre or just cruel.....or a gift.....

I wish Matthew were awake so I could tell him.

eta: plus, when I got back in the car after grocery shopping, the song "Love the One You're With" was on the radio (we loved that song) followed by "I Wanna Be Sedated." That song order is exactly Frank's twisted sense of humor!

U2 is my favorite band so I would love fans for neighbors and would borrow all their bootlegs! That's extremely sweet of them to bake you an apple crisp and hopefully this is the beginning of a warm friendship
