Confused about losing fat and gaining muscle

I am confused as to whether you can lose fat without losing weight. I was off my feet for a long time because of a broken bone. At the end of that time a lot of my pants didn't fit in the glutes and upper thighs although my weight was the same. My doctor said "if your pants don't fit you've gained weight". She told me that after I got active again I "would lose the weight". I am gradually resuming my old activities, and my pants are fitting better, but my weight is the same. Does anyone have any insight? Should I be trying to lose weight too?

You can lose muscle but stay the same weight. Your doctor isn't correct on that.
Due to an illness I actually lost scale weight, but went soft because I didn't exercise and lost muscle.

I find it hard to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time because I usually have to eat more when I lift weights that are heavy (for me).

A pound of fat takes up more space than a pound of muscle. So you could be the same weight, but exchanged muscle for fat, which could be why your pants are tight.

well said.

some people's pants fit looser despite staying at the same weight if the distribution of your body tissues change.

if you have a way of tracking your fat%, you could see a decline in the %. you could do this with a body fat scale or calipers, or even your fingers pinching your waist. the internet has instructions on how to do it by pinching your waist (and thighs and/or hips too).
