The water weight gain in intramuscular, its all held within your muscles.
The most I've ever gained, was less than 2lbs. I gain more than that before TTOM.
And for a lot of people its a temporary thing.

I can usually find a tub of creatine (60-80 servings) for under $10. Sometimes on Amazon, sometimes in the clearance section of Bodybuilding.com, sometimes on SupplementHunt.com. It's very cheap per serving. I just add a scoop (5g) to a smoothie or protein shake each day.

Edited: Number of servings - just checked my containers... the containers have even more servings than I thought!

If you don’t do the loading phase then it minimizes your chance of weight gain. But the water weight gained should be small and temporary anyway.

Keep in mind that too much protein can be hard on the kidneys. Not a problem when you're young, but kidney function declines somewhat as you age. There can be too much of a good thing.

Yes, thanks! Not to be a Debbie Downer, but creatine supplements are also contraindicated with certain medications, so it may not work for everyone. As always, YMMV.

I just listened to the episode with Peter Attia from a few days ago. I don’t think he is the final expert on all things by any means, but there was one part that sounded pertinent to this discussion, which was not to worry about supplements or the finer points of a particular eating style until you have the basic elements of fitness mastered. His perspective seems to be that fitness gives the biggest bang for the buck for health and longevity.

For general public and his patients, he mentioned as bare minimum, being able to deadlift your bodyweight for 10 reps, do a wall sit for 2 minutes, a deadhang for 60 seconds, and have a VO2 max at least 75% of expected for age.

I’m only partway through this episode but so far it’s useful. There is a lot about protein.

Both encouraging and depressing about muscle at older age. He says older people CAN get stronger, but they can’t build much muscle. I may need to listen again because I am not sure what he meant by “older” when he was talking about that.
