I've got a Belfast theme going on here.

Just finished Stuart Neville's, "the Ghosts of Belfast." And, currently reading Adrian McKinty "the Cold Cold Ground" Sean Duffy series. I prefer McKinty's writing style and he's from the area he writes about, with great descriptions and prose. Both are heavier and grittier topics than I normally care to read about, but I've been just diving in.

For short stories, I've been reading an M. R. James Ghost stories collection for the month of October. Also, Belfast Noir.

I've started to mix presidential autobiographies into my reading schedule.
In some cases, where the president did not write an actual autobiography, I have substituted a collection of their writings, collected during their term(s) in office. I'm not going in any particular order. Last one finished was Coolidge; currently reading Obama; next up is good old George Washington.

I'm dragging a bit in this one, honestly. The writing is not the liveliest and since I read it before going to sleep I'm only getting a few pages done before I nod off. Just reached the part where the Elvira character is taking off, so it has picked up.

It's mostly a memoir about his life and how he came to learn about and utilize meditation in his daily life and work. Good read. (FYI, he's a reporter with ABC news, if you think his name might be familiar, this is why. The audio book is read by the author, and well done, but I got the hardback copy from the library when I'd finished listening to their audio cd set so I could make some notes about the practices he recommends.)
I liked this a lot even though I still fail at establishing a regular meditation practice. It was surprising to me how much grief he took from colleagues about meditation when mindfulness practices are pretty well accepted in my experience--I guess we are a bunch of fruits and nuts in California

In addition to Elvira, I'm listening to the first book in Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus series, The Amulet of Samarkand, and enjoying it a lot: clever and snarky middle grade fantasy.

Visine and Cell phones.

just an FYI: PSA

came from the eye doctor and she said reading on Kindle is much better for your eyes, than the cell phone..

so if anyone reads off the Cell, just be mindful it's not good for your eyes..

We can read emails and quick stuff but don't read on the phones.

ALSo.. She told me to ditch the Visine.. it's not good for our eyes..

My sons loved the Bartimaeus series!

I'm noticing Elvira drags a bit, too. She's very wordy so I find myself skimming some things - like when she describes every single dancer she works with.

Visine (and other over the counter bottled eye drops) contain preservatives, so they can have a longer shelf life. I had to switch to single serve or preservative-free when I was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy.

And they are the ones promoted the most. Horrible.

I got some other drops where I just use once in AM and once before bed.

She knew exactly when I got that itchy eye and said I have dry eyes. I thought it was allergies.

Refresh Optive eye drops are preservative-free. I’ve used them several times with my dogs that had eye issues. After my Buddy’s corneal graft surgery, he was on the drops for the rest of his life.

Lol. That’s what my doctor prescribed. Refresh Tears.

I didn’t know anything about preservatives in eye drops. I did hear before that they take a layer off your eyes. Or something like that. I was about to buy 3 bottles of Visine before my visit. Glad I didn’t.

I read Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It was really engaging.

I also read The Nature of Small Birds by Susie Finkbeiner. It was a really good book about a family in Michigan. She's a faith-based author, but I don't think her faith emphasis is strong.
