My goals are to gain endurance, strength, and flexibility, and lean out a bit. I would like to actually see some muscle!
As others have pointed out, gaining and preserving muscle mass, bone density and flexibility becomes more important as we age.

I definitely liked looking muscular... when I was.

Recently, I bought a 40lb bag of bird seed & the shop guy put it on his shoulder to carry it out to the car. I asked to carry it instead. He was really surprised and asked why. I replied: "The more often I accept help, the sooner I'll actually need it." He understood, said "Fair enough", then I put it on my own shoulder & carried it out with no problem.

To my toddlers/tweens/teens: "One day you WILL be stronger than me, but today is NOT the day." Proud to say that still stands. They're now 24, and both lift weights at the gym (though not as heavy as I do...yet).
Those who CAN exercise well into their elder years often say "I just never stopped doing it, every day." To be able to say that, one needs to START doing it, EVERY DAY!
To reduce the size of my butt, I need to reduce the size of my "But......"

I like muscle, which is good because I have an athletic build. I also have some fat covering that muscle, which I could do without!! I also like the look of Jamie Eason. Like others have said, I'm 50 now and want to preserve what I have and having had some major issues around 46 I want to stay healthy for a long time.

Me, I love the fitness competitor look. Or maybe the figure competitor look. And I want as much muscle as I can pack on, cause I know as I age, I'm going to lose it. And I also want to be STRONG! Cause when I'm 100, I want to still weight train, and more important, pick my butt up off the toilet without help.

Right now, I'm lifting on my own, taking moves and exercises from several different books I've got.

So who else wants muscles?

Gwyneth is showing pretty amazing muscle tone on her legs. I bet she's able to get herself off the toilet when she's 100.

Angela Bassett has always made me swoon. And Serena Williams at her fittest.

I'm another aspiring muscle gal. I build it easily but have trouble getting that layer of fat off.....

Yeah, although I personally like the lifting heavy approach - at least during periods of the year when I'm working on that particular thing - I would agree that there are plenty of different ways of getting enough muscle tissue AND enough motor function to age well.

I like heavy weights; I bought squat stands based on advice here and recently invested in Olympic bars and plates. But, there's validity for building and keeping muscle without iron - I don't have much experience with TA, but I can certainly see doing it with power yoga, classical stretch, etc.

As for the look - well, I really have no concerns about getting a female bodybuilder look. Neither genetics nor my eating habits nor the time I'm willing to put into it is ever going to get me there. And since I don't aspire to it, I don't care. On the other hand - if what I like to do gives me soccer player thighs (which I had when I was a soccer player, ha), I won't worry about that, either.

Me too! It's hard enough for me to build muscle now, I can't imagine how tough it is going to be to maintain it after menopause.

Yes, muscle please! However, I definitely feel like I can get it, I just can't see it unless I flex because of the stubborn fat my body seems to like to hold on to!

I love muscles!!! but at 5'2 and an apple building muscle over a layer of fat gives me a hausfrau look. I love to build when Im at my leanest. Nothing beats a great pair of strong, sexy muscular legs and rounded bottom!
