I have noticed the stress incontinence mostly in the week or so after ovulation. I try to stay away from really high impact activities during this week of the month. My youngest baby is 1 year now and the problem is slowly getting better but that week out of the month is the biggest problem.

One thing I learned afterwards was that some doctors recommend no more than 40 pounds and some as low as 25. Maybe the 40 was just too much for me. I started carrying my then 1 1/2 year old around (who was about 25 pounds and grew with time) -- that probably didn't help at all.
My friend recently had surgery to correct for a bladder prolapse and a rectocele. Her doctor told her not to use anything heavier than 10 pounds ever again. I wonder if the second condtion plus her being extremely overweight had a bearing on the doctor telling her that.

I would think there must be a way to hold your abs in or do kegels while lifting that would hold everything in place. No?

I'm intrigued about the diet angle, though. I'm sure you can discuss it since this has nothing to do with weight loss. Did you figure this out by yourself or read about it? Wouldn't it be something if the answer was that simple? Doctors would lose a fortune.

Good point videofit! I would love to hear the discoveries a previous poster mentioned about diet helping and since it doesn't pertain to weight loss, I would think it is allowed. So spill! What have you discoverd? My best guess would be eliminate caffeine.

Actually, being overweight does contribute to prolapse issues. All the weight pushing on the organs.

I've been to a PT for kegel therapy.
I'll second everything Renee has said. It was a little weird doing kegels with the PT, but I learned a lot.

I sought out a pelvic floor specialist when a gyn told me that I needed a hysterectomy for uterine prolapse. I went to the specialist to confirm. Turned out, my uterus is not prolapsed, but my bladder rolls forward. A hysterectomy would have made the problem worse.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS get a second opinion!

Kegels helped my bladder problems and to date, I've avoided surgery. I've never seen those balls before.

Oh, forgot to add...

The PT I went to, gave me hip exercises that were exactly like Callanetics!
She showed me a model of a woman's hips and how all the pelvic floor muscles are connected to the hips.

Fit44- - That's exactly why I pursued other options for so long. My OBGYN who delivered my last 3 babies insisted I have a hysterectomy. I fought him on it for months, bought all the books I could find on it and he knew I didn't have a prolapsed uterus (just prolapsed bladder and -- sorry you have to read this -- rectum) When I finally did have surgery, it was after seeing 3 more doctors and finding two (a urologist and OBGYN that worked perform surgeries together) who agreed that my uterus could stay!

Debbie -- You're right that eliminating caffeine is helpful. Most books also say that smoking makes it worse too (as does being overweight and getting older/losing estrogen).

I welcome anyone to go to my blog, where I talk about my eating quite a bit. ( www.bradybunchmom.com ) Basically, I find these vast improvements by eliminating all processed foods. If you look to my earlier posts in February or March, I probably explain it more -- like in this post . And I have a journal of my eating that I keep not all the time, but in conjunction with that blog at www.reneeonrawfood.com -- which has more eating information to the left of that page. Hope this explains more w/o saying too much here.

I hate to say this, but it was a male gyn. He figured I was finished having children so I didn't need my uterus anyway.
He made it sound like it was a walk in the park.

Had it not been for my hormone induced migraines I would have believed him. I was worried what surgical menopause would do to my migraines so I researched.

The uterus is much more than a house for our babies! It plays a big part of our endocrine system and even plays a role during natural menopause.
The pelvic floor specialist said hysterectomy for prolapse is old school thinking. They have found it doesn't really solve prolapse problems. They are finding that in many cases, it is better to leave the uterus.

Rectocele's are common. Most women have them. Diet plays a role in many ways. Caffiene and fake sugar are reak havoc on the bladder. Fiber, keeping everything running smoothly.

It's one of those subjects that is rarely discussed.
I wished I had known at the age of 16 how important kegel exercises are!

FitMom. when we were 16 they probably hadn't even heard of the name, kegel... so.. all we can do now is make things better as they learn more. It's like what I did for my son when he was a baby, now they say, can't do it that way any more. I used to lay him on his stomach... now.. you have to lay them on their back.. ha.. when the baby comes over I still put her on her stomach. don't tell my son...lol
