Postprandial Hypotension - any info/experience?

I have had a terrible time with feeling absolutely awful after I eat. I suspect it's either a blood pressure or blood sugar issue and was wondering if anyone has had personal experience with postprandial hypotension.

Gosh, I'm sorry you've got this. I was never diagnosed with this, but I experienced something similar for a few months before I had my gallbladder removed. I was getting increasingly tired and felt lousy after meals. Sometimes I had to lay down. It continued for a few months after the surgery. I still sometimes feel tired after eating but nothing like before.

I'm seeing an acupuncturist now to help with my lousy digestion. He has me avoiding dairy and cold foods, and raw vegetables. And wants me to keep with low fat foods in small quantities. Seems to be helping a bit.

Of course I never had anything like this before perimenopause!

Do you know if your fatigue after eating was caused by your gallbladder problem? I haven't been diagnosed but I have crushing fatigue, brain fog, muscle weakness, etc. every time I eat. It's become debilitating. I have so many lab results that are abnormal and my PCP has referred me to 5 specialists (I've seen two already) and ordered expensive tests. I need one doctor to look at my results and symptoms and figure this all out. I know you understand, unfortunately.

Yep, I sure do understand! I really have no idea if if my gallbladder was causing the after-eating nightmare that I had, but I'd have to assume it was partly to blame. Oddly enough, I never had the terrible gallbladder pain that everyone else has when they want to remove it. I probably wouldn't have even known about the stones. But I had yellowish stools and really bad fatigue after eating that was just getting worse. One time I had a slight fever with the yellow stool, so I went to urgent care since it was a Saturday. They ran all sorts of tests and then decided to ultrasound my gallbladder. There were a couple gallstones but it wasn't causing me any pain. They told me it would eventually cause me pain so perhaps I should get it removed. So I just kind of agreed to it. But the surgeon was really concerned that there was liver bile stones in the duct so I had another ultrasound for that. Not that either. So she sent me for a full gastro scan where I had to swallow a camera to follow through my digestive track and also a full colonoscopy (which thankfully she did require me to do this since I had some polyps removed). Nothing there either. I also had anemia and really low vitamin D. Again, multiple blood tests and other specialists amounted to nothing. So I had the surgery and it really wrecked my digestion even worse for about six months after. I was also taking iron pills for the anemia and those absolutely tore my intestines apart for nearly a year before I figured that out. (I now just take lactoferrin, which is a supplement that helps your body absorb iron from food, and riboflavin for red blood cell production. And I go to a tanning booth twice a week year round for the vitamin D! I also use magnesium spray on my feet before bed since I can't take it orally because of my crappy digestion.)

I think it had to do with my declining estrogen levels at the time, which I really didn't understand was happening. I really didn't even know what perimenopause was at that point (now two years ago!) since I had just turned 45. I've had nerve issues and digestion issues since I started perimenopause, now nearly 3 years ago. When my estrogen level tanks, so does my digestion.

Acupuncture has been helping though, and avoiding the problematic foods that I've identified.

I still have no idea what exactly is wrong with me though. I am seeing an endocrinologist this week for kicks and giggles. I really am adverse to more tests and medications though, so I'm not really looking forward to it...

What a mess. I hope the endocrinologist can help. I was super healthy and never even got a cold until a few years ago when I started having serious medical issues and it's all been downhill since then. My poor family - I feel terrible about being such a burden.

I've had two colectomies (one year apart) so I know all about lousy digestion. And my estrogen/LH levels are down to nothing. My doctor wants me to have a brain MRI to rule out a pituitary tumor. Low sodium, elevated liver enzymes, low white blood count, low vitamin D, slightly anemic, it just goes on and on. Every time I get tested they find something new but no diagnosis and no treatment.

I was super healthy too! I was the one who never had a cold. Then boom, all this came on within a year. Two blood clots in my leg, anemia, low vitamin D, gallbladder removal, elevated liver enzymes, low red and white blood cells. Huge weight gain, hair loss. Terrible night sweats and anxiety in the middle of the night. Sometimes I swear I was having a heart attack!

I gave up trying to figure it out last year during covid. I felt like they just kept sending me on to the next specialist on a wild goose chase. But I was just left with more worry and no answers. I'm sure the endocrinologist will also send me for an MRI for a pituitary tumor. I had an MRI done about 20 years ago but thankfully no tumor. I had a lot of the same symptoms that I have now (but I was on the pill at the time and oddly enough had all the same symptoms that I do now, and I also had all these symptoms for an entire year after I had my son 16 years ago, but they all went away after I started eating less calories and working out more).

I figured since doctors couldn't help me that I could at least try to help myself. The magnesium spray has helped a bit I think. Increasing my vitamin D through UV light has helped and taking lactoferrin and riboflavin have helped with the anemia (and changing my diet). Acupuncture has helped with some aspects recently. The fatigue after eating has gone away mostly but now I get chills after eating instead at certain points in my cycle (usually when my estrogen level drops).

I sure hope you find some answers, I sure can relate!

I'm glad you figured out some things that have helped. I forgot about the night sweats - I have those, too. And terrible terrible insomnia. And Raynaud's with chilblains on my poor fingers.

I'm sorry about everything you've been through and really hope the endocrinologist is good and can help. Keep me updated either on the forum or by PM. Thinking of you.
