My PayPal account is linked to a credit card as well, but most of my transactions actually aren't on the card, they are based on credit I earn (e.g., I sell something, then I spend that credit).

Beth, it will happen to everyone eventually---without notice. Since my account was opened a long time ago, the sending limit was higher than it is with newer accounts, but apparently everyone has a sending limit unless they have a "verified" account (meaning a linked bank account).

I think it's horrible that Paypal includes withdrawing your own cash balance as part of the sending limit, and that you can have a cash balance and not be able to withdraw it unless you add a bank account or get the Paypal credit card. I think I will start writing some letters after the holidays.

I have learned to never keep a cash balance on Paypal. I don't trust that company at all.

Years back, when I was buying and selling often on Ebay, I had a bank account on there, but took it off after reading about so many people's accounts being hacked. I haven't used Ebay much recently, and this was the first time I have bought something in a while. So, it was quite a surprise to not be able to pay through Paypal with the cash balance in the account!

I didn't like the fact that they didn't give any notice either. You just get hit with it all of a sudden when you're trying to make a payment. Out of the blue they tell you you've reached your limit of $x and before that you didn't even realize you had a limit. This is a great thread. Maybe anyone curious about what their "limit" is can just email PayPal to find out ahead of time.

I use Paypal and I agree they are the WORST. Their customer service is a joke. I could talk to three different CSR about the same problem and get three different answers. It's ridiculous, and they don't seem to care that you're unhappy with them. Paypal's evil sister, BillMeLater, is just as bad, if not worst.

PayPal told me my "limit" was USD 10K at which point I would have to submit a bank account number or use their credit card, neither of which I plan on doing.

One alternative is to ask sellers on ebay (I don't sell, I only buy) if they will take a credit card number directly or a check/money order instead of PayPal but I had no luck with this and I suspect it's because sellers don't want to incur Ebay/Paypal's wrath by doing something outside of the formal process.

Too bad because ebay was a great place to get cheap workouts, among other items, like electronics, etc.

I also learned a few weeks ago that PayPal has refused to process donations to Wikileaks, so I've just written them off completely now.

Talk about a bad business model - "You've spent almost USD 10,000$ with us so we'll have to drop you as a customer if you don't give us personal banking information or use our company's credit card!"

And: "We'll also be deciding what organizations you can donate to!"

Screw 'em.

When you sign up for Paypal you have to select a type of account and the limits are stated when you select one. The basic free account has always had a spending limit and when you reach it, you either have to link up a bank account or credit card or go to the next account level up in order to keep using Paypal, which will have a different fee structure. I have a premiere business account with a Paypal debit card, and have no limit, but I do have a bank and credit card linked up to that account. I've had this for many years, since I buy and sell alot.
I've never had problems with anything Paypal, luckily.
Even during the Deep Discount DVD hackings and my card number stolen, Paypal was great; calling me immediately, cancelling my card, sending a new one, reversing the transactions - and way faster than my bank was when I had a similar thing happen! With Paypal my money was returned within 24 hours, the bank (Chase) took 75 days after I sent them a signed affidavit and they took a week or two to investigate.

So, I DO have mine set up with a credit card--does this mean I might not have this problem?

I hate Paypal. I did without it for quite some time, but there are some transactions where Paypal is the best or only option.

I have had a number of really bad Paypal experiences, and their customer service is lousy. I watch my account like a hawk.

Beth, my paypal account is set up with a credit card, but I have limits. To view your limits, log into your account and in account overview, under Welcome, your name! it says "Account Limits: View Limits".
