How do you customize a workout?

Did Paul Katami Hollywood 4x4 bootcamp today but live in an apartment and can't do the impact.

So, I used sliders and did all kinds of lunges; mountain climbers, hip thrusts, etc. for the 1 minute of cardio and 1 minute of abs.

The format of 4x4 is 1 minute each of cardio, lower body, upper body, abs repeated twice for 1 set with 5 totals sets.

For example i did 1m of hip thrusts or mountain climbers (with slides) or reverse, curtsy, side lunge, hamstring curl (w slides) for the cardio and abs and followed along with the dvd for the upper and lower body.

i really sweat alot and got to work by butt and hamstrings alot, much more than in the workout as is.

My favorite "modify ups" are bupees, pushups, and those moves Tony H calls Military March.

I can't do many pushups using hands because of an injury so I always do pushups on forearms when working out and want to use pushups ... or rather that is what I did for two years. Now I am able to do the real deal ... carefully ... and only a few, but think there has been some progress.

I do chest presses instead of push ups.

When they do high impact, I either do what they do and just keep my feet on the ground or I do the move they did before making it high impact or I follow the modifier.

If I do a burpee type move, I put my hands on a chair or couch and walk my feet out instead of jumping.

If they are moving faster than I feel comfortable with, I just move slower.

I use my Fanny Lifter for burpees, mountain climbers push ups, squat thrusts.

If a 2 handed move is too hard or fast with the weights I'm holding I'll just do one hand at a time.

I will often do supine bird dog (legs in table and lower opposite arm and leg) instead of crunches.

I sub exercises into programs all the time; my rule of thumb is to substitute something equivalent (i.e., a front squat for a back squat; a press for a press, a pull for a pull - that kind of thing). I have tons of plank variations and seldom do "regular" planks anymore. I very seldom use cardio equipment and sub for that freely with whatever seems appropriate.

With walking type workouts:

> I've tried doing them with gliding disks or FitStix or weighted gloves.
> I change the angle of knee ups from time to time.
> I start lunging or doing arm movements right away instead of waiting.
> I never do "two up and two backs". I always mess up the rhythm, so I just walk around or do "4 up and 4 backs".
> When I get tired of some of the standard moves, I do V-steps or "out out in ins".
> I grapevine instead of double side step.

Etc.
