Legs up the wall

Anyone do this regularly? Have you seen any benefits?

How long do you do it...and what do you do to pass the time?

I'm interested in replies as well. I keep thinking I should do it while meditating.

i first found out about legs up the wall in Barbara Benagh's AM/PM workout. it really feels good for your lower back. it's like a massage, and your legs feel weightless, yet the weight stretches the lower back. as far as "passing the time" it's a restorative pose - you can relax and breathe. you can move your legs, cross them, do a semi-plough, you can stretch one leg out along the wall as far as you feel comfortable with the other leg straight, you can move both legs as wide as you feel comfortable outward.

it's a good sub for when you want an alternative to plough.

i tagged this thread to show other discussions about this pose.

here's Kate Vantucci's wall practice, "Wacky Wall Walker":

I do actually do this while meditating. I try to do ten minutes of meditation after my workout, and if I do it, I do it with legs up the wall. I've found it helps me to center a bit more while meditating - I don't know if it is recommended (I know for the most part it is recommended you sit in a cross-legged position) but it's what works for me.

Jeannine, Kate is based here in Rochester! I have done her Wacky Wall Whacker; I love her fun titles and restful routines.

There are a lot of great articles about the benefits of viparita karani (legs up the wall). Here is one:

There is no one right way to do this pose. Here are some great tips and variations:

This article from Yoga Journal has some additional tips:

As far as what to do to pass the time, the best thing is probably do do nothing. However, you could also listen to a podcast, play an audio book, etc.

Thanks for the links, Beth.

I hadn't searched this topic in several months but lo and behold after posting on this thread yesterday, guess what big brother YouTube had for recommendations for me this morning! I really have mixed feelings on tailored recommendations. It's certainly convenient but also creeps me out a bit!

My SI joints have been cranky again (due for my chiro appt on Wed) and my foot has been hurting so I'm going to make an effort to do this even if it's just 3 minutes a day for now.
