Moms of school-aged kids and tweenagers, July-Sept 2021

New thread!

I've totally fallen off the check-in wagon! Not sure why.

We went to Atlanta the week of July 10. Visited my dad and grandma and my brother was there too. It was kind of rough--that house is so bad for two elderly people with granite floors everywhere, steep stairs, only one bedroom (my grandma's) on the main level, and SO MUCH CLUTTER. My dad won't get rid of anything and he has the craziest reasons why. It was a decent vacation--rained quite a bit but we still got out.

BUT we didn't get to paddle again because DH decided to take a ride on a kid's scooter while wearing his sandals. Ended up somehow ripping off his sandal and a couple of toenails. His foot is still swollen and pretty sore. We made it to the aquarium the day before and my brother went to Amicalola Falls with his the day after.

I also got to see a VF friend from my other check-in! We had breakfast one morning.

I pretty much ate continuously there and put on a few pounds. Not sure exactly how I'll get rid of it but the kids started school today so our schedules will be hectic and maybe that will help!

I don't have much of a workout plan right now. I actually got in two nice runs in ATL with some Moms Run This Town ladies, plus the hike and some weight work. I've been using my bike and rower.

I do want to start running twice a week. When we first got back, I just couldn't deal with the heat! it was about 110 and in ATL only in the 80s. But it rained all this week and it's been really nice.

I have some DVD sets I've been meaning to try, so I may do those along with runs, rows, and rides. We shall see!

When does everyone else start school? Are you all back in-person now?

Hi Pratima! Hi all!

I'm sorry your trip was rough but glad you got to see your family! Poor DH! Oh, that makes me cringe.

My kids start school on August 11th. We are planning for in-person, unless a big bad change happens in the meantime. Fingers crossed that they can go to school normally all year! I am looking forward to some predictable non-kid time.

I preordered the latest Cathe set, which uses bands and loops. I think she's now expecting it to go out in late August. I hope my knees will let me use it! Sometimes new equipment can feel fun and motivating.

I've been trying to do my "kneehab" exercises but have not kept up with it daily. I'm hopeful that the change from the kids going to school will help me make some good habits, including daily exercise! I've been using Cathe's Pyramid workouts lately, do just "Pyramid Down" premixes.

I've been watching a decluttering and organizing show called "Hot Mess House" and I am feeling really inspired to declutter our whole house. DD and I have been going through her room, one section at a time. She has a story about every tiny toy and why she wants it or not. I keep encouraging her to just go fast and get it over with, but it's hard. I like to keep lots of stuff, too, so I understand. I hope she'll learn to appreciate an uncluttered space and keep it up forever.

How cool that you got to meet up with a VFer! You are great at that

It's so nice to check in together! I hope all is well for everyone.

Hello!

I joined the check-in for a Yoga Sadhana today, and here's what I posted there:

"Today I did some of Ana and Ravi's Short Sets for Inspiration and Ecstasy. I don't know how long I've had this DVD, but I didn't recognize any of it! I did the Tune-In, Warm-Ups, Look Young Forever, Closing Prayer, and Dance On! There are several other segments that I might try on other days."

Today I took the kids to get haircuts and then we went to Old Navy so they could each pick out a few things to wear to school. They have plenty of clothes already, but it feels nice to get new School Clothes.

How has back-to-school been, Pratima?

Hi Stephanie! Where is the camp? How did it go?

TonyaK, have you gotten anything from the school regarding COVID policies? Mine were in school 3 days and I got an email from DD's school reporting a case in her grade. Our govern actually signed an order prohibiting schools from requiring masks! No one really wears them now, but some cities are taking matters into their own hands and requiring them in city facilities.

Last week seemed SO long! The kids starting school plus all their taekwondo and gymnastics practices made for a rough week. I mean, it went smoothly but I felt like i was perpetually trying to remember where I had to go next. I think we have all the driving worked out. DD is able to take the bus to school from a stop right near DS's school (where I still have to drop him off). Because she gets out one period/hour early, we have to pick her up but that means no crowds and we get back to DS's school in time to pick him up.

DS moved up a belt level in TKD so now his classes are all really late. Tonight's is at 5:45 PM and is the earliest during the week. If he goes Saturday it's at 11:45 with sparring right after, but I don't think he's going to always go to Saturday or sparring, so that means a 6:20 Wed. or 7 PM Friday class. Blech!

I am still trying to sort out my workout life. I thought I'd do a DVD series but then decided I needed to do my old Lindsay Brin PF Weight Loss lower body workout because it's great for running shape (lots of unilateral work). So I guess I'll plan out something with that once a week and hopefully 3 runs. I'm still doing walk/run and it seems SO hard but then again it's in the high 80s and very humid even at 5 AM.

Hi friends!

Today I went for a morning walk. I often ask the kids if they want to go, and they almost always say no. Today DS came with me! DD thought about it, but decided to stay home. If they don't come, I listen to a podcast and enjoy that very much as well.

Later, the kids and I met our friends at the neighborhood pool, which was really nice. We are trying to squeeze as much summer fun as we can out of their last 9 days before school starts.

Tonight I did the warm-ups from Yoga Bliss Hips (Ravi and Ana) and it felt really nice. I'm aiming for a short daily yoga practice, but I have missed half the days so far since I started. Oh well, anything is better than nothing.

Pratima, our school district has announced that masks will be optional for the students. All staff and teachers who don't prove that they're vaccinated will have to wear masks. We have not heard from our school yet - like NOTHING - but they posted on facebook that they are sending out an email tomorrow.

Did anything happen in response to the case in DD's grade? Like did that class have to go remote?

We haven't had the kids in their normal amount of activities yet, and I do not envy you with keeping up with their schedules! I hope you'll all adjust to the new TKD times. Later practices can mess with dinner, bathing, bedtime, falling asleep - I hope you'll get it smoothed out.

I feel like we've had a tiny taste of your weather since it's been so hot here this summer - we've never had so many 100-degree days. I know your temps are higher! I am, as always, amazed that you get up early to run! Also that it's still hot, even early in the morning. What is unilateral work? I hope the Lindsay + running plan will work for you!

Hi Stephanie! It's so nice to see you!

TonyaK, our governor actually signed an order a while back PROHIBITING schools from requiring masks. I think at least one district is ignoring him and requiring them anyway. Our district and all the ones nearby didn't do anything unusual. School started on time, back to the way things were before the shutdowns. I did notice that at DD's school, at lunch they're still only sitting on one side of the table (so not facing each other). That may also be the case at DS's, but he's also on the playground in the mornings now with everyone, so no distancing going on there.

Honestly if we hadn't all been sick, I'd be concerned. And as time goes on, I'm getting a little worried because of course DS is still too young to get vaccinated.

When we were in CO in June, it was 100 degrees the day we arrived! It was pretty miserable because my in-laws have I guess a swamp cooler but the vents are only in the living room. It was a sweaty, stuffy night. Do you have AC? My parents house didn't when I was growing up but it was never 100 degrees.

I've decided that school pickup is the worst. It's just a lot of driving. The round-trip to get DD is 30 minutes. DS's school is sort of on the way back but I stood in the pickup line a while so by the time I got back it had been 50 minutes since I left. I may try today getting out of the car and see if that's faster.

Last night was a late night! DS did well in the later class. There are about 5 or 6 younger kids and the rest are all probably 13 and up. I do think we at least got it so he goes M and S one week and then maybe M and W the next. I'll have to take him Mondays and DS on Wednesdays and we can take turns Saturdays.

Despite being supposedly "back to normal" with our schedules, things don't feel normal, you know? I mean, a lot has changed--my job, DD in middle school and on a new team, etcl,--but somehow it feels REALLY different.

Hi Friends,

OMG, Pratima, that's a lot of driving! DS2 is in a camp these past two weeks that's 30 minutes away. It's 20 if you go off peak hours, but it really takes 30 minutes when I have to get him. It's making me crazy--two hours a day in the car. I'm so sorry you have to deal with that everyday! Is there no one with whom you can carpool?

That AZ prohibition for mask mandates is insane.

Tonya, yay, back to school! My kids go back on the 23rd. I can't wait! We all need some ROUTINE!

Cases are way up here, but it's not a huge deal because we have very high vaccination rates in our county. One of my neighbors got covid, but she wasn't really that sick. But still, the line outside one of the testing sites has been crazy long. I drive by it everyday, it's much longer than it was earlier in the summer. It's like this whole misery will never end!

I spent $$$$ to do a medically supervised weight loss program earlier this summer. I'm in week 8 of 12, and I've only lost 6lbs. Some of that is muscle. I am PISSED and I told them so. They assured me my 20lb. goal was realistic, but it's obviously not. The doc suggested some modifications and I'll try those this week, but I'm so dejected. The last time I weighed this much, I was 7 months pregnant. It's so frustrating.

I do have an appointment with my gyn. I'm going on HRT. I have osteopenia, and we're hoping HRT will arrest the decline of bone loss. Aging sucks. Menopause sucks.

Gosh, I'm just a ray of sunshine, aren't I? I know, you've missed all this positivity! HAHAHAHA

Stephanie, I had to post because I'm probably even crankier than you today! The weight loss--what do they have you do? I mean, what does the program consist of?

I did find someone to possibly carpool with for DS but because DD gets out early, it's highly unlikely anyone could help there and that's the part that makes the drive so long. At least we only have to pick her up! I thought I'd have to drive here there too.

So DD has been all attitude this week. DH caught her one night on her laptop watching silly Youtube videos. She had practice until 8, was doing homework with a nasty attitude after, and then snuck on her laptop. DH told me all this and it's supposed to be between them and I'm annoyed.

I got my annual email from DS's teacher saying he's being disrespectful to the teachers and other kids. I have no idea why he starts off like this every year. So I got to talk to him about that yesterday and email his teacher.

I was supposed to get a haircut today. My usual lady keeps messing it up somehow so I made an appointment with this curly hair specialist I've seen once before. It's kind of far so I'd planned on taking the morning to go. I made an appointment with her in April and then canceled b/c I got COVID. Made another last month and she canceled b/c she went out of town. Canceled again this morning b/c her daughter has COVID.

A couple of ladies i know were going to paddle this morning and I couldn't go b/c of the haircut. And then DH got called in to help with two surgeries so I had to take the kids to school. He came back an hour later with both surgeries canceled.

So basically my day and week haven't gone at all the way I hoped and of course none of it is under my control. Still, it just sucks.

In case Stephanie wasn't gloomy enough, I just had to put in my 2 (or more) cents! I'm at the point where I'm just waiting to see what else can go wrong. :/ Let's hope this is it.

Hi friends!

Yesterday I subscribed to Lindsay Brin's streaming service again (month-to-month) and I am using the yoga and stretching programs, which are led by Amy. I have done them for two days in a row, and so far, so good. My legs are so trembly during yoga - I know I have lost strength because of babying my hurt knee.

Pratima, your governor I think Florida's gov did the same thing. Here, the different school districts have made different decisions and of course people are protesting and upset no matter what. I am hoping the vaccine will be approved for kids soon!! That will make me feel better about school. My kids really need to go in person and be around lots of kids.

DD really needs to see her teacher in person. She did not do well with remote learning. She is so shy, she did not want to speak on the zoom calls and her teacher never did individual breakout rooms with them, even though there were only 20 kids in the class! (here is my complaining moment ). Now she is behind. I hope she can catch up. I wasn't very successful at trying to work with her over the summer. We might need a tutor to help us.

The kids start back on Wednesday! Woo-hoo and Boo-hoo! I am very excited for them and for myself. I'm also worried about them and covid (not freaking out-level, but still worried). The school didn't have many cases last year, but they wore masks and had cohorts and we didn't have Delta yet. I hope it will go okay!

Stephanie, I'm so mad about your weight loss program!! I'm just a few pounds lighter than what I weighed when I was 9 months pregnant with DD, who weighed 10 lbs!! I know my habits have been yo-yoing between okay and pretty bad. I hope that I can make some good changes with back-to-school and see some weightloss. I would love to lose 40 pounds, but anything would be welcome!

I hope you are both having some good things happen - it sounds like it's been a string of annoyances and BS. Time for some good stuff!!
