The people I trust seem to agree on:
  • eat 1 gram of protein per pound of lean mass if you're overweight, per pound of total weight if you aren't
  • lift
  • be patient; muscle takes a long time to grow and there are no shortcuts or magic unless you go the drug route

At my age I want to keep things simple, and I don't have time to read every website that claims to have The Secrets That Doctors Really Hate.

Per pound of total weight? Thats a lot of protein. I probably get a third of my weight. But I'm not really trying to increase muscle mass. Just want to tone and keep the fat off.

Toning means building muscle. Period. Toning means building muscle.

And I get at least 140 grams of protein a day, more often, 160grams.

I had to increase my protein after menopause. I eat between 100 and 140 grams of protein a day--depending on the kind o exercising I'm getting.

I feel better; I'm less susceptible to colds; and my skin looks better.

You might consider supplementing with creatine. Its proven to help muscle recovery, growth, and can help your brain as you get older.

I'm planning a YouTube video on the benefits of creatine in the next few days. Getting some research done right now.

I've read about the benefits of creatine, but doesn't it cause water bloat?

What about something like Hydrolyzed collagen in anything liquid (coffee, tea, smoothies)? That could be a way to boost protein. It's also supposed to be good for healing the gut/skin/hair.

It might further blunt appetite, though.

I would think the easiest way would be having a protein shake daily as a between meal snack or maybe at bedtime.

Another idea -- maybe you aren't digesting the protein so always have digestive enzymes with meals. I usually buy Trader Joe's just because I always shop there.

I have never been able to eat a lot of protein. I occasionally will buy game meat on sale at Sprouts. The elk and boar are delicious. I never liked venison -- too gamey. Supermarket has bison on sale and I may buy it. I just can't eat a lot of red meat every day even if I take digestive enzymes.

I seriously don't understand how this question was even allowed with the "No D*et Rule" but even a moderator replied on this thread so, I guess we are allowed to talk about d*et now if we just use a synonym?

Even though this isn’t about diet for weight loss, it is still a diet thread so I am closing it here.
