Stellar teacher Barbara Benagh has breathing problems herself, she has asthma.

Here is her breathing practice -- you have to follow all the lengths:

http://www.yogastudio.org/teachings/asthma_intro.shtml

I have asthma and other problems myself and try to follow her guidelines pretty conscientiously. Anything with retentions, and even restrictions (like uyayii), give me difficulty. I'd never do BOF or kapalabhati.

I know in Pilates when you do hundreds and have asthma you are told to breathe different. I suffer from asthma and have to practice this way. Instead of 5 breaths in and 5 out you do 3 in and 7 ou cuz with our disease the exhale is always longer than the inhale.

Now...even though they mention nothing in kundalini......i practice regularly and find ways to use my breath to suit me. Say breath of fire is fine but what I can't do is breathe in and out quicly during an exercise like twisting.........like inhale one way exhale the other....i usually inhale one way and exhale 2 ways....does that make sense?

Hi Sharon! It's been too long and I wish I could visit NYC and hang out at a yoga studio with you again. Totally consumed with raising two kids (9-month-old and 4-year-old boys) and holding down a job while still running the household with hubby who also holds down a full-time job... yoga practice is all about squeezing in one visit to a studio once a month or a quarter and maybe a 60-min practice every other week But still keeping fit and handling a mild case of asthma myself so looking forward to reading more from Benagh.
