Yes, seriously.

Substitute "African", "Jewish", "Indian" or any other ethnicity for "Chinese", with the accompanying 'me speeky not so good English'. Or imagine it saying a "Greek" doctor instead, with the 'voice' made to sound like a Greek speaking halting English.

I think sensitivities over this kind of thing have changed over the years -- think about Mickey Rooney's portrayal of the Asian upstairs neighbor in "Breakfast At Tiffany's" (complete with fake buck teeth) -- in its day, hilarious -- today, cringe-inducing for most people.

I agree. It was funny and the ethnic jab was unnecessary.

as a chinese american, i am a little conflicted as well. while i do think the joke is funny, it is a bit insulting. i know the op meant no offense, but it does conjure up the stereotype of an absurd oriental medicine man.

Sorry if I offended some of our fellow VFers. That was never my intention - being a non-native-English-speaker myself. I have removed the offending word from the title and hope you still find the dialogue funny.

While I think it's good not to be insulting of other people, I think political correctness goes way overboard sometimes. Geez, it's a joke-- a funny one at that, but it seems like all the sensitivity just aims to take the humor out of everything. I didn't think the joke mocked the Chinese doctor as an "absurd medicine man", it was a funny and witty perspective on health concerns.

Why is it that no gets offended at the so called halting speech mannerisms of Italian immigrants? That's a gooda pizza pie...Oh wait, that's funny, but the OP joke is not. Ok. Or what about German immigrants, or Greek immigrants, etc. and where does it end?

If political correctness ruled everything there would only be like three jokes left in the world. I'm starting to think that people want to find things to be offended about. I'm not referring to anyone here specifically, but I hear on tv all the time that this is offensive and that's offensive. I think there are bigger things in the world to be offended and outraged about than some joke that wasn't meant to hurt anyone. Doesn't intent count for anything? I don't know....it's JMO and trying to make sense of this.
