Another vote for Jenny Ford, she has some good basic step workouts on YouTube. Gilad's Step Aerobics, Cathe's Basic Step, and Kari Anderson's Go are also good with basic easy to follow choreography.
I was lucky to find a full sized step at a garage sale. I have had smaller ones, but prefer the full sized one as it feels more stable.

Huge fan of step here, still incorporate it weekly into my rotation. Getting into the complex choreography really makes time fly. I love Cathe, Amy Bento and Seasun Zieger for great step workouts.

You have had some great suggestions here for starting up with step. Christi Taylor is a really good teacher - her choreo is complex, but she drills it in such a way you can really get it. Her cuing is excellent, and her Move Master breakdowns can be really helpful. Another thought that hasn't been mentioned yet is Rob Glick. You can probably find some snippets of his on You Tube to try him out. Excellent cuing and good energy.

I like Kathy's Step Workout - the music is pleasant, the set is appealing, she gives basic instructions, the crew is likable, and it's divided into 3 segments so you can do the whole thing or add onto other stuff, or just have a fun short workout.

Yep, I think Amy released hers around the same time too.

So sad that step seems to be passe. I love it!

Yes, I love the step and the hi/lo in Mission Possible! Another favorite of mine that is easy to follow and has both step and hi/lo is CIA Cardio Crazy with Gay Gasper.

Gay Gasper and Petra Kolber are pretty easy to follow. But start with Gilad or Gin. I know when you first start even the simplest things like switching from a basic to a knee-up seems difficult.

Some years ago I tried to do step. I got Cathe's basic step and found it too hard, then Gin Miller's which I found really basic and repetive. In the last month I've tried again and am really enjoying it thanks to Jenny Ford's youtube workouts. I have started with the basic ones and while they are simple they have enough complexity that I don't find them boring. At he end I'm sweaty( which I tell myself is because of the wood stove, not my lack of condition) and I'm surprised that it's over because time flew. I have four downloaded and will get moreas soon as I can. I like the outdoors ones, tonight is Hawaii, something I really look forward to as it was -32 here last night. I have one of those club steps and just use the top without any risers.
