plantar fasciitis and rebounding

My non-exercising sister was recently diagnosed with PF. It was getting better but in the last few days is flaring up again. In addition to helping heal her PF, she wants to start exercising a bit and is particularly interested in rebounding. Nothing too strenuous, mostly walking to “Walk it Out!” on the Wii.

We have questions about the best approach for her. I’ve done some internet searches and more intensive VF searches and am getting somewhat mixed messages.

Questions:

Any experience with PF and gentle rebounding? This is where answers seem to be all over the board. I have a rebounder she can and will try but we wondered about your experiences. I don’t want to make it worse if that is the majority experience.

I have several stretching DVDs, most notably Jane Adams Gentle Yoga, Classical Stretch Season 11, and CS Aging Backwards. Any of these you would recommend? I have others but these were ones I saw mentioned in previous threads.

Any other thoughts? I saw Yoga toes mentioned. I’m almost embarrassed to ask, but would those foam spacers you use to paint your toenails help? I already have those.

All thoughts and suggestions welcome!

ETA: streaming is not an option. Our internet is too slow, unreliable, and choppy.

I highly recommend Jill Miller's Yoga Tune Up Quick Fix Lower Body Series DVD. When I had PF I started doing the 10 minute feet and ankles tune up before I went to my job as a barista and it helped a lot.

I can't remember for sure but I think I tried rebounding at that time and it hurt. Odds are good I tried it barefoot though so wearing shoes might be different. Also stretching and rolling the feet before rebounding might be helpful.

I didn't have to separators at the time my PF was at its worst but I later got Flex Tastic ones. I'm not sure how they compare to Yoga Toes but they do help my feet kind of relax and they feel good.

Yoga Toes space your toes out WAY more than the pedicure spacers. It's a totally different thing.

My mom turned me on to a great PF at-home PT exercise. Sit up straight in a chair or on the edge of a bed, extend the affected leg straight out from the body, point your toe hard, and draw the alphabet in the air. Repeat if both feet are affected. I have gotten incredible relief from this. I also started wearing almost exclusively Skechers for daily activities and working out, as they provide a lot more support than most shoes. When I wear socks, I wear Bombas or Feetures, which have much more arch support than other socks.

I've been battling PF for almost a year with no resolution/improvement. Everything I do seems to hurt my feet!

I had a really bad case of PF several years ago. I found gentle rebounding in bare feet helped. I can really accentuate stretching my feet on the soft surface of the rebounder. I have a bungy rebounder which is a softer bounce than most spring ones. I do almost all of my workouts in bare feet and I believe the combo of stretching & strengthening my feet is what cured my PF. But that is only my experience, we are all different.

Using my Yoga toes regularly was helpful. I also found these PF socks very helpful and supportive for barefoot workouts. If I feel like I’m getting a flare up, I put them on right away

Pam, that's a really good point about the differences in rebounders. Mine is a spring one so maybe that's one reason it didn't work the best for me. I wholeheartedly agree about strengthening the feet. They are literally our foundation and deserve proper care!

I deal with PF and I rebound all the time. I have a JumpSport. This has been better for me than walking on the treadmill or out side.

I agree! I don’t think we pay enough attention to our feet day to day. When an injury or something like PF sets in, it’s a big wake up call! Since having a nasty case of PF that took months to resolve, I’m very aware of where my feet are at.

ETA I started out with an Urban Rebounder, then graduated to a small JumpSport. I eventually found a deal on a larger Bellicon. The difference between the UR springs and the bungees is huge.

Definitely! I have had PF and TTS in the past and last month was diagnosed with elevated first metatarsals and the podiatrist wanted to go immediately to surgery! No thank you! I have orthotics being made and getting a second opinion in a couple weeks. I want to do everything I can to avoid surgery!

I have an Urban Rebounder. So far I have never used it enough to justify getting smthg better but I love the idea of the bungees!

I feel for you. I had PF for a year, too. I gave up rebounding, stepping, etc. during that time and it still took a long time to heal. I was wearing night splints, tried different insoles, it was a nightmare. Daily foam rolling loosened the calf muscles and manual foot massages helped ease the discomfort for me.
