2024 Decluttering Support and Motivation

Starting the thread for the new year.
This is a check in for us to report on our decluttering efforts and to seek advice and support. All are welcome.

I'm still decluttering in preparation for a move to a condo in 2025 now. It'll be going rather slowly in 2024, but still wanting this group to carry on!

Thanks for starting the new thread, Anita!

Happy New Year to all!

I absolutely have to get the spare room of dumping decluttered this year before hubby just throws everything out. My goal is to have it done by the end of the first quarter of the year.

Happy New Year!!!

DH is already working on the shed today. I told him I would help him starting tomorrow, but I’m going to enjoy the holiday today. We have several bags to take to Goodwill already and I’m sure we’re going to be adding more.

When DH retires we’ll be moving into the condo we bought for DD to live in when she was in school. It’s still going to be a few years, but we definitely need to declutter because we will be downsizing.

getting overwhelmed. we are in the midst of a remodel - i know i sound like a broken record since i've been posting about the same old thing since last year.

i did manage to donate several small bags of things to the local charity via Savers thrift store, however, in December.

i have a 15-minute/day declutter habit on my 2024 list of habits. Today, that 15-minute session will be the area by the kitchen door**.

back in December, I also learned that Home Depot accepts laptop batteries for disposal for free - they have 3 bins at the exits: batteries, bulbs, and plastic bags**. i happily dumped 2 batteries - a "bloated" jump-starter for cars* and DS21's phone battery.

*car jump-starter is similar to this one:

**area in kitchen that i want to tackle today has a bunch of old plastic bags. our state banned non-decomposable plastic bags several years ago.

Happy New Year folks!

I spent last Friday, December 29, my day off, doing my annual put away Christmas decorations/and cleaning up bins in the basement. In the end, I had a good amount of stuff going to Goodwill and 2 empty bins which I donated to Goodwill as well. I am hoping for a work snow day sometime soon so I can spend more time on a few of the photo bins; sorting, organizing etc. But it's a start. I also want to get some kind of a shelf so I can store things on the shelf and get rid of this large table that holds things like the tool box, paint stuff etc. I felt good about my progress. Either tomorrow or next Sunday I am going to work on the bins that have linens etc in them. I am not sure why I feel I need 10 bath rugs.
I hope all is well.

Mary

Hi! I didn't realize this thread was here and was posting elsewhere. I've bookmarked this now.

DH dropped off a few grocery paper bags at Goodwill yesterday, which felt really good (they'd been sitting in the trunk for awhile). Today I'm working to package up and freeze dry beans that were grown last summer (some are planting stock). This will clear up several seed-starting shelves and part of a half-wall bookcase that runs along the edge of the living room.

I desperately need support and advice lol! My problem is that I'm willing to declutter but Tiny Bubble and Big Bubble are grumbly about it. They are both hesitant to get rid of anything, and it's also difficult to find the time. But we really need to do this. I know that we're going to be moving in some years, and I don't want it to be like our last move. For the last move, Big Bubble got rid of a lot of stuff, but most stuff was shoved in bins and moved to this house. He didn't go through any of it, and I've even found bins of obvious trash lol! So, yea would rather not go through that again.

DH has been the main declutter person lately (a typical for our household) - he has sent some items to art auctions (things he purchased in the '000 may yield low 0,000). He sold some gold and silver today - $150. Nice surprise.

bubbles - it can be difficult to find time to declutter. I've been just trying to tidy up small areas and end up decluttering a bit in the process. sorry about finding bins full of trash that would make me crazy.

i found that when i got moving on my own decluttering, it motivated others in the household to do so. i'm not saying you have any clutter, but even just tidying what belongs to you tends to be contagious to others.
