Encouragement that long steady state moderate cardio works!

Someone very close to me made changes in the past three months. (it isn't me, but it is motivating me to do so!)

They started walking outside for an hour a day, pretty much seven days a week at a decent pace. There are no hills in our area. They also made some changes to their eating, but nothing extreme.

The health benefits from doing this for three months are amazing!

-reduction of systolic and diastolic blood pressure-fifteen points each-now in normal range from hbp

-reduction of fasting blood sugar by 39 points-now in normal range from being diabetic

-reduction of total cholesterol by 46 points

-reduction of triglycerides by 128 points

I am extremely proud and motivated for this person, and now I need to try to get myself together to do the same!! I don't have diabetes or hbp or high cholesterol, but I don't want to end up with them.

I wanted to post this to encourage those of us who cannot do extreme workouts, or choose not to do extreme workouts. For some people, long and steady state cardio really does work in making wonderful changes to our health!!!

Steady cardio definitely works. Some years ago, my mother just walked an hour a day and gave up soda. Those were her only changes. She lost 8 pounds in one month and was breathing better! Unfortunately, she has since gone back to soda and stopped walking, but when she was walking she was losing weight and feeling better about herself. Plus, she was in less pain.

Reduced pain is a great reason to exercise! I hope she will be able to get back to it.

Sherry, I love that the amazing results that you posted have nothing to do with weight or size. Exercise has so many health benefits behind the scenes, and it's sad that people will give it up because they don't transform into fitness models after a month.

I've mentioned on other threads, that a study on people who lived into their 90s in good health, found that they did some exercise daily, however small.

Thanks, Sue!!! He does not know about weight loss. Unlike me, he stays off the scale and only uses it at doctor's visits. The bloodwork results are so encouraging, though!!! Weight loss would be great, but the health improvements are major. He did this with long work hours at a horribly stressful job.

Please keep posting about those studies! I could use reminders of those benefits myself.

Thanks for posting that Sherry. I've been feeling rather morose because I can't run or do any of the high impact stuff or even Zumba! I used to love high energy aerobics, but times have simply changed for this body. I got to the gym on Sunday and was able to do elliptical on the lowest setting for 30 minutes, it's encouraging to know I can work with that and still get something out of it.
