resistance band - care, maintenance & i need a new one

question 1: can band life be prolonged?

question 2: is this a good brand? - amazon link Super Exercise Band

my favorite extra long pilates band that i've owned for more than 5 years just broke down.*

i immediately went to a storage box where i kept some bands in a plastic bag that were new. this *new band might have been used 1x, and i noticed it had not deteriorated or broken down - you know how rubber products weaken or break down over time. this led me to believe that because it was in that bag this long barely used, it remained intact.

the one favorite, extra long band that had just torn somehow fell under my step co. step and i think contact with dirt and oil might have contributed to its demise. i usually kept it out, hanging over my weight bench.

i found this site (scroll to the bottom) where they recommend wiping it down with water - i have never done this and might consider doing this when i purchase a new one.

*both of these bands came from my friend who got them from her yoga teacher..... maybe i should ask her if she can still get these for me.

I have this band that you asked about. I bought it back in November and of course, haven't had it long enough for it to develop problems. Supposedly these have a "lifetime" guarantee, whatever that means.

I don't use water on my bands, but sometimes dust them with a body powder puff and cornstarch-based body powder; and always store them in plastic zipper bags. They last a long time. I have bands from Winsor, Leslie, Gaiam, the Firm, Suzanne Bowen.

thanks cynthia. the band that was in the bag had a little powder in it which might explain why it lasted this long.

I store mine in something like this:

I store my resistance bands in the back zipper (three of them with different tensions) and in the front zipper I store my resistance loops. If they are sweaty after a workout, I let them dry before storing them back in. And so far, so good. I bought them all locally some years back.

I have some bands and cords that got mold on them when our dehumidifier died. Can I clean them or should I just throw them out?

I never had a mold issue with my resistance bands, but from time to time (not too often) I rinse them with warm soapy water and once they are dry I use a little bit of baby powder to keep them from sticking. This works very well and the bands last longer.

I also store mine using cornstarch baby powder. It really helps prolong the life of the bands, even those cheap free ones that you get with workout dvd's.

I recently purchased that band and like it. Shortly after purchasing it, the vendor emailed a booklet of exercises you can do with it.

I learned to never attempt to prolong the life of these bands. I was doing a Pilates workout with an old band stretched around both feet, very tight, when it snapped and one broken end smacked me in the eye. I was scared to think what could have happened.
