I didn't really like this article. I believe in strength training; both free weights and body weight. I don't believe Weight Watchers is a great resource for science, especially since the article is quoted from their chief "science" officer who is an adjunct psychology professor.

Years ago I watched "The Truth About Exercise" on BBC and it was really an eye opener. I think there is a lot of truth in NEAT and how it affects our biology.

There is so much we don't know about exercise.

Personally I just want to keep moving, doing what I enjoy and what makes my body feel good.

I thought the article was rather simplistic. Not only do we have much to learn about exercise, we have a great deal to learn about our metabolism and how metabolism responds to exercise, especially resistance training.

While the calorie model of the metabolism is good, in broad brush strokes, it is too limited to account for digestive physiology and its relation to muscle development and maintenance. And research into nutrition is still in its infancy--witness any diet war that breaks out, here or in the larger public sphere.

I agree. It was a very simple article.

The calorie in/calorie out theory has pretty much been disproven. Exercise science is also in it's infancy...the theory of losing muscle as we age has also been debunked.

In my simple mind, I think about 100 years ago people didn't worry about getting in their workouts. They got plenty of activity in living life. I guess one could argue that in earlier times the Romans prepared for war or the Olympics but that wasn't the general population. Anyway, I digress.

Exactly. I don't get worked up about studies. You can always find one to agree with your point of view.

Would you cite the most recent studies on these?

Both of the above debunked theories have proven true for me. Maybe I'm special?

Yes, I don't think calorie in-calorie out has at all been disproven. Maybe the way people think about it has been too simplistic in the past. But, the general principle is true.

We do lose muscle as we age, but it is not a given fact of aging but of disuse. We can keep our muscle. I think it generally requires more (a lot more!) work to do so as we age. But it isn't an inevitability.
