if i happen to choose a meat with less fat (like chicken breast) i add low sodium chicken broth (even plain old water will do) and make sure the meat is immersed in water. or, add lots of veggies for moisture. in reply to the OP, we have a Hamilton Beach: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hamilton-B...Cooker/4012120 it has 3 heating settings. and hasn't burned anything. i know what you mean, though, a few we had owned in the past burned it. i honestly can't remember the make and model of those, though.

I picked up a at Calphalon 4 quart slow cooker at Bloomingdale's last year and it has been fantastic. It cooks very evenly and reliably. Makes great veggie soups, sauces and veggie chili. Plus I had a question and the Calphalon customer service was excellent.

I have a no-frills $20 4 qt. oval Hamilton Beach cooker that has the opposite problem as many of you: it cooks too slowly--most recipes take an extra hour. I'm planning to see how much I really use the cooker now that summer is over and might upgrade to one with a timer.
