In reading Anne Fletcher's book Thin for Life (much of which is based on people at the weight loss registry), she said that in her experience 10% of the people who maintain a substantial weight loss can do so without exercise. The other 90% have to exercise to maintain.
It's an interesting discussion. I don't discount it because I know that my natural tendencies, if I let them loose, would put me right back where started. So, I have to exercise consistently and watch what I eat all the time. It has just become a lifestyle. I tend to do more intensive cardio exercising than walking and include strength training and think helps with my doing what I need to in order to keep the weight off.
So many "experts" hone in on walking, and only walking. I wish they would include a broader variety of examples of exercise.
