Question Need Total Gym Reviews

I coordinate an employee wellness program and have an employee interested in the Total Gym. I told her I'd get her some honest reviews from real people thus my post here.

If you have a total gym:

What model do you have?

Do you like it? Why? Why not?

How often do you use it?

Do you feel that it's improved your fitness level?

If you got rid of it why did it have to go?

Do you feel that you use it mostly for resistance work? Cardiovascular work?

Please feel free to add any additional thoughts.

If anyone knows where to get the best bargain please do chime in!

Thanks so much for your willingness to help!

I hated the Total Gym. A friend loaned me hers with the hope that I would buy it from her. Well I didn't because I really didn't like it. So then she offered to give it to me and I still said no. Awkward, too easy, a pain really. Went straight back to my videos. Maybe you will get more positive feedback but not from me!

I have the Total Gym model 1700 with the Pilates attachments. I actually bought it about 5-6 years ago for my husband cause he thought he wanted to workout. He tried it one time and gave up. I used it a few times, and although it was a decent machine, I just prefer my free weights and dvds better.

Pros: It does give a good body weight resistance workout. Upper Body work is more challenging than Lower body. Once set up it folds up nicely and runs smoothly. Putting on the attachments is relatively easy.

Cons: Set up was a little tricky, but I read the instructions. LOL. Kind of boring IMO although I did have a couple of vhs that I could watch.

You do get some slight cardio effect just from the exertion, but definitely more strength work.
I don't know if it would increase my fitness level or not as I'm pretty high intermediate/advanced anyway. Maybe if I actually used it more often.
I became interested in it because Chuck Norris endorsed it and he's a distant relative (and I'm a big fan).

Too bad you're not closer Lannette! I'd sell you mine - CHEAP!

I had one for the longest time and liked it and used it but got rid of it due to lack of space. I got a TRX Suspension system instead, same body weight idea but a lot more versatile.

Thanks Kate but no thanks! I was serious when I said it was an employee who asked about it. I have a Pilates reformer and a Gyrotonic and while I enjoy both neither gets anywhere near enough use. Hey! Maybe I should try to sell her one of my machines. heh heh heh

Just kidding.

We have one. I like it for the upper body, but IMO it doesn't offer enough resistance for the lower body. My husband on the other hand loves it and uses it frequently.

Weight plates

I have the XLS. There is a bar that can be inserted in the holes in the side to hold weight plates to increase the resistance for lower body work.
