I’ve had three in my cervical spine. I think they work but I noticed that I’m usually feeling worse for a few weeks after. I think it’s because all the muscles in my back, neck and shoulder are all locked up because my spine is locked up. Last time I had trigger point shots two weeks after to combat that muscle pain and that worked quite well. I have a vertebrae injury and arthritis. I think I am allowed three in the same area each calendar year.
They aren’t without risk. I had a minor spinal headache after my last one. It’s a specific headache that can occur after an epidural. The epidural lets me turn my head better right after the injection so I have found them valuable. |

Side effect:
I was given the oral dose for a severe case of poison ivy. For several hours, 24 or less and probably didn’t start until an hour or two after the treatment dose, I had uncontrollable/ irrational fear. My logical mind was not affected. I knew the fear was ridiculous but I couldn’t easily stop it. I probably could have controlled it meditative-style but I didn’t think of doing that. The best part of that was waiting for some other woman to arrive at work so that she could go into the bathroom and cover the mirror because of - - - Freddie Krueger LOL! The worst part was when my boss wouldn’t let me not speak during normal table rounds, so I cried through the whole thing right in front of everybody. A few years later, my boss came in late after a morning cortisone injection for tennis elbow; his first. In the afternoon, I found him just sitting at his desk with tears rolling down his cheeks. Once I was done laughing, he explained that he was experiencing a very deep uncontrollable/irrational sadness. (About “treatment dose”: You have to take taper-off doses after the oral treatment - Why? How does this compare to going in for a shot?) |

I've had injections in my shoulders over the years for bad bursitis/tendinosis. A few years ago I had a frozen shoulder on the right and a tendinosis flare up on the left, and had both injected within in a few months of each other and wound up with a case of shingles. I'm not going to that again!

Overall comment: Disfigured knuckles*: not much you can do about it. you can get surgery. i had surgery on one of the knuckles because there was a tiny cyst in it. how i found that out was that the nail for that finger had a vertical "ridge" in it and the ridge was what we were trying to address with the surgery. The knuckle still has a "bump" in it, but it's not crooked. This surgery was done over 10 years ago. The problem with inflammation is that getting surgery might cause more inflammation. Exercises: A few** of my knuckles cannot bend all the way. I'd say bendability in said knuckles are at 98%. if you take both hands and bend all of the digits, then open them up, it helps increase flexibility and joint movement in the knuckles. i just did it now, and noticed excellent response in knuckle functionality. If cold weather causes tightness, you can put your hands against a warm compress or heating pad. *crooked knuckles: both top knuckles of my pinkies are very noticeable when i extend both pinkies. in the bent position, it's less obvious. Left ring finger and left index finger top knuckles are slightly crooked, and when i extend that finger, the top points slightly to the left rather than straight out. right middle finger has this same problem except it points to the right. **my left thumb knuckle, left middle finger knuckle and left index bottom knuckle are "tight" Pain: I have zero pain in my knuckles. A low sodium diet (i don't track the mg) has been the main preventer of pain. Disfigurement has been unavoidable. It sort of creeps up unnoticed. I didn't realize my knuckles were getting crooked - i cannot remember when it started happening! And I play the piano. It's not affected, but playing helps the flexibility. crooked pinkies affect my computer typing however!!!! so annoyed with this.

I have had them in shoulder, knees, and hip (general) and hip (specific bursa injection)
The shoulder one didn't help because the arthritis was too bad. For my right knee I bought 4 pain free years after the first one but now it's progressed to where I know I'll need a knee replacement. The "general" hip injection didn't help but when the ortho guy diagnosed bursitis, a cortisone injection banished pain that had greatly affected my ability to walk and has now for over a year. So YMMV but it's worth a--excuse me--shot.
