My PT said pool exercise was worthless

My PT said pool exercise (swimming, water running in deep water, and deep water aerobics) was "worthless". In fact, when I said I had been doing these things (with a broken bone in my foot) he made a scoffing noise. I am looking for a new PT, but I don't know what to think now about the pool. I thought that even professional athletes used the pool when they were injured. Does anyone know?

My son is a kinesiologist and an MD. When he worked as a kin, he did a lot of pool rehab with his clients. I think you’re wise to find a new PT and get a second opinion. I swam & did deep water running a lot after I broke my ankle several years ago. It kept me mobile and strong when I couldn’t do weight bearing exercise.

The water would act as resistance for your body, so there is nothing "worthless" about it. It's very soothing, gentle but can also have an endurance based and cardio effect too, depending on the exercises.

Did he have any other suggestions for you that were non-water based exercises? Yeah, I would see someone else that isn't as "worthless" as him.

I’m always amazed! How do these people get degrees as PTs? One only has to look at a swimmer’s physique to see the benefits of water training and swimming.

WTH? Water resistance training is great for your body! Swimming laps at a steady state or quicker is great cardio. The resistance of the water works your muscles and some focused exercises can focus on a specific body part. Laps with a kickboard doing butterfly kicks does wonders for the core! I am baffled that a PT would say it is worthless.

Omg, that is crazy. It's just his opinion and he probably doesn't know much about water therapy. I know it always makes my hip and shoulder feel better!

My hospital, until recently, had a pool for rehab.

It sprung a leak, and was becoming more costly to have so they did end up getting rid of it. But had it for years and used it a lot!

I was surprised to read the thread title. Any exercise is worthwhile (especially with a broken foot!), and I think water exercise is widely known as good for injured people. Did the physical therapist want you to stop your pool exercise and see him exclusively? His scoffing was unnecessary and unprofessional.

I would get a new PT! Unbelievable! Tell that to the triathletes that pool exercise is worthless!

I would have asked him/her what school he/she graduated from!
