OT - Tell me about where you live

I’m retired now and working toward moving someplace that’s a little more in line with the way I want to live. Northern Wisconsin is beautiful, but I’m sick of the brutal winters and I’m also an animal lover and I’m sick of seeing dead deer hanging in everyone’s yards and sticking out the back of their pick up trucks. I’m also tired of run ins with the bear dog hunters who run their dogs on my property. I’m not trying to criticize anyone here who hunts - I just want to live someplace with less hunting and a milder climate. Anyone here love where they live and don’t have to look at dead animals every day?

I live in the middle of Pinal county in Arizona--this is the Sonoran desert, and where I live is very rural. We have hunters, but in my 62 years of living in AZ, I've seen a deer on the hood of truck twice. And both times it was my Dad coming back from his hunt.

The Sonoran desert is beautiful beyond words, but many people lack the sensitivity to its subtlety and can't see its beauty.

I make no excuses for the summer heat. I hate it as much as non-Arizonans, but cooler weather is always just a short drive away, even in southern AZ.

my son is attending college in Flagstaff, and it's a place i would consider living. my good friend who is also from Hawaii is considering moving to Flagstaff - her kids live on the mainland.

i live in Hawaii. no hunting except on the island of Lana'i and Moloka'i, and during designated times. not many people hunt in the entire state of Hawaii. animals coming into the state require quarantine to guard from rabies.

it's very expensive to live here. but the weather and lifestyle are great. state taxes do not tax pensions. animals are loved here in the aloha state. people are very environmentally conscious. we're also known as the health state - usually rank in the top 3 nationwide for health and longevity.

i was born in ohio due to dad being in the air force. both of my parents were born and raised in Honolulu, so when he was ready to retire, we moved back to Hawaii.

Hmmm...my climate is milder but not by much! I am in southern part of Wisconsin . Since I am in the city, I don't see many dead animals. I do love where I live. It's has a variety of restaurants. It's pretty safe. The airport is big enough to have some direct flights. However, it's a small enough city that I can get from one side to another in 30 minutes. Getting out of the city takes me 45 minutes. Housing is expensive compared to the rest of Wisconsin, but cheap compared to anywhere on the coast. If I need a big city experience, Milwaukee is about 1.5 hours and Chicago is 2.5 hours away.

However, last winter was brutal. In 10 years, I would love to become a snow bird. I have family in the Phoenix area. Having a place in Wisconsin and one in Arizona would still be cheaper than having 1 in California.

Where I live in central NC doesn't have much of a winter (it snowed a little bit, once, last year). The trade-off is it is hot as heck in summer, and we don't get much of a fall.

But pluses: 2 hours to the ocean and 2 hours to the mountains. 1ish hour to the state's major cities, zoos, museums, colleges. I like it well-enough.

My mom lived in Hendersonville, NC for awhile and she liked the weather there.

Today there is a family holding their semi-annual street race on the county highway one mile from my house. It’s illegal, but I appear to be the only one who thinks it should be shut down. When I drove by tonight there were about 30 cars out front and about 100 people milling about. I don’t know what they do if a car pulls out onto the highway in the middle of the race or a deer runs out (we have A TON of deer here). I know they use walkie talkies, but I still think something bad is going to happen one of these days.

I'm in NJ so no . Believe it or not, parts of NJ are more country than parts of GA. I've seen more critters in my part of NJ than any part of GA I've lived or visited. I'm always seeing dead animals in the road. NJ is also expensive and cold. I love the cold part, not so much the expensive part.

I live in the Chicago suburbs. But I miss living in Flagstaff, which I finished up my undergraduate degree at. I liked the mountains and hiking and climate. In a perfect world I would live in a place like Flagstaff for only part of the year because even though most of the time I'm a hermit, I like living nearby a big city like Chicago for various reasons.

But here in the suburbs there are forest preserves, great health care, lots of shopping choices, and we have the Chicago Botanic Gardens and Ravinia, so there's that. And though my sister who lives in the city would probably argue with me somewhat on this one, we have some decent eating establishments in the suburbs. Climate not so great at the peak of summer and in the middle of winter though.
