I literally couldn't tell you the last time we locked our doors (whether we are home or not). Half the time, we forget to even close our door and just have the storm door closed and the front door wide open. So yes, very safe here. But country living (we live on 40 acres outside a town of 3,000) is not for everyone.

I feel safe where I live in a rural area outside Madison, Wisconsin. However, the summers are humid and the winters cold. Worst of both worlds! And while I feel safe, I always lock my doors.

A family member lived out in the country on several acres. One day, she found the neighbor boy in her kitchen. She sent him home and told him not to come in her house without knocking. She felt something wasn't right so she began locking the doors. The next week, he went into another home in their small town and killed the woman. So we always locked the door growing up. I never saw it as an inconvenience. I have my door locked right now even though my husband and I both home.

I live just north of Boston in the town I grew up in and always felt safe. But things changed here and I no longer feel safe.

Yesterday a man stole a huge truck, crashed into an SUV and a house destroying the small house. He got out of the truck and randomly shot and killed two people (one a retired state trooper). This happened a block from our high school and beach right along my walking route. I think the entire town is in shock and mourning.

A week or two ago, a man walked into a Publix Grocery store about 5 miles from my house and shot and killed a woman and her two-year-old grandson. No motive. Just insane. He had been posting on his Facebook page that he wanted to kill someone.

That is so true. I was out walking at the time and the sirens were deafening. I had know idea what was going on. We are still waiting for the motive (if there even is one) and the names of the victims and perpetrator to be released. Thankfully the perpetrator was shot and killed by the police.
