Tangerine, I think the China Bayles series is up to number 27! It is worthwhile to read them in order. I could not get into her other series either.
You may also like Ellen Hart's Jane Lawless series.

Has anyone mentioned the Charles Lenox series yet? The first is A Beautiful Blue Death, but the author's recently written some prequels.
