I had osteopenia the first time I was tested when I turned 40. I started lifting weights and the next year I was no longer considered to have osteopenia. I have since gone through menopause and it did decrease a little but I always have a better bone density after I started lifting again. My new endocrinologist says lifting weights is not necessary that walking would do the trick but I like to lift and I really think it was a huge factor in increasing my bone density.

BTW I agree with Vintage about your doctors' recommendations-they sound nuts.

I was also told by my physician to try and go where you know they use the same bone density scanner as was used on your last test. She mentioned that the readings differ between companies/scanners. Especially if you are going every few years. If my bone density is good and lab work is good she usually does not have me go very often.

I was told that for an ultrasound on my thyroid -- I had to keep going back to the same machine -- so, I wondered about it for this kind of thing, too. I'm 55 and have never had one but I'm thinking it's probably time.
