Some doctors just don't think of it. I think few of us are fortunate enough to have holistic doctors and we need to take some matters into our own hands. This was my third DEXA - I used to see a holistic rheumatologist and she ordered the first one because of the strong arthritis meds that I take and have taken for 20 years, which are known bone robbers.

It's also important for anyone with any type of IBS, UC, Crohn's, Celiac, etc. issues because those disorders interfere with the absorption of nutrients from your food. I have a lot of cards stacked against my bones. My first was a baseline, my second showed no difference but this one had some alarming reduction in the forearm and a small reduction in the hip.

She has lots of information on her website about how bad the pharm drugs for bones are. I like how she is both a MD and a ND. She also has a newsletter which ironically talked about how older bones can build more density. Here is link: http://drcarolyndean.com/
Thank you, I added that to the check-in mission statement!

I had been doing heavy weights for years and have always taken loads of vitamins and minerals forever. Yet I started to get some bone loss around menopause. My gyno, who is a menopause specialist, put me on estradiol patches, progesterone cream and 25mg DHEA. I've had bone scans for hips and spine every two years for the past ten years and not gotten worse. I have done light weight/high rep endurance workouts and walking and that's pretty much it for the past decade. My mother never took vitamins, never exercised, took loads of BigPharma drugs and was a hunchback who had shrunk four inches when she was my age.

My last bone scan showed osteopenia as well. I'd have to look at my results again but I don't think it had reached osteoporosis. And I too had strayed from fitness over the past year but I'm getting better about it. Yes, an on-topic check-in would be welcome to me as well.

Well, a friend of mine goes to the same doctor, and I know she had a baseline scan done. I should just ask for one -- I didn't think of it (was just in there in the last few weeks for a physical) at the time. Thanks for the info!
