Unhappy Costochondritis?? OH MY!!

OK, I didn't die during the night, though there were times I almost wanted to! Good grief, this is PAINFUL. I just did some research online which suggests that this is what is going on, this costochondritis crap, but it just came out of nowhere! Yesterday, leaving a movie theater all of a sudden the pain in my chest was just WOW! I knew it wasn't "heart" related, I have felt this before on a much lesser level, the day or so after heavy chestwork. But THIS intensity, never, and never so many days after my last session with weights. I have not done heavy weights since last Wednesday. It hit me like a ton of bricks the following MONDAY?! I usually feel as if I have wasted my time when I go to the doc, and after reading about this, it seems that I would probably get nowhere, other than perhaps told to take some aspirin and not aggrivate it.

This is such a wonderful source of info, and since this is very likely related to "lifting" I bet I can get some feedback in here. Anybody had this really severely and if so, did you see a doc and what did they say? How long did you suffer with it? As stated, I have had mild episodes, and just stayed away from chest work for a while, but I could not even lay down to sleep last night, it was worse laying down, so I am just a walking zombie with a heat pad for now. INFO ANYBODY???

I'm so sorry you're going through this and I hope it gets better soon.

I've gotten stabbing pains right in the middle of my chest from time to time, moreso when I'm stressed and recently when I started working out again. I had no idea it was an actual medical condition and it seemed to go away on its own when I slowly breathed through the pain. I really thought it was a panic attack or something.

Do you know it is costochondritis? Please see your doc, you may have some pleurisy going on which if left untreated can drag you down for the rest of the winter. I know, years ago I misdiagnosed myself as having DOMS in the pecs and lats and finally, when I feared a heart attack and went to the clinic, was diagnosed with pleurisy and a nice case of walking pneumonia. It took months and repeated antibiotic rounds to come around to normal.

Let us know how you make out and what the diagnosis is - I hope you feel better soon.

I can understand how this might be mistaken for a heart attack, but if you really sort of focus on where the pain is, it is the WALL of the chest, really sharp in the center and then sort of radiating out towards the inside of the breast. Evidently the cartiledge gets inflamed, and I always understood it when it was the day after chestwork, telling me that I evidently overdid it, but for it to hit 5 full days later, jeeze. And BAM, right out of the blue! Exhaling (fully) hurts way more than inhaling. I think Murphy is hangin around just to be sure I don't even THINK about doing P90X until Jan. checkin time, LOL. More and more I am feeling as if I am being FORCED to recognize my age and change up my lifting habits, but that sucks. I always felt that if I STAYED stong, I wouldn't have to "bend" to my age. Guess it is back to high rep work for pecs and bye bye heavy/slow.

Hi Ya'll,

i get a pain from my chest tween my breasts.....talk about a killer pain. i dont know if its the same as Urban's & Red Flame's but i been gettin mine since i was a teen. it comes & goes on its own with no rhyme or reason. Oddly enuff, if i get overheated ala xmas shopping in large department store in lots of layers WILL set it off! i've stop doin the xmas shopping like this

I've gone to the docs, done some tests and been hooked up 2 monitors....docs dont know what it is & i've always learn to live with it.

My pains come in 2 sizes: long {10-60 mts} building normal breathing or fast{5-10 mts} hard sharp shallow breathing--i dont move when hit with these.

I'm more than happy to hear from someone who's got an idea on what i got. they dont come when i workout, when i'm not & doing day-to-day things.

Was this coupled with any cold symptoms? Coughing or phlegm? I don't feel as if I have any cold, although, for weeks now I have had some sort of mild post nasal drainage at the back of my throat, but no major coughing or anything like that. But you are right of course, that's what the docs are there for. It is just that I have only recently finished undergoing every test under the sun for this abdominal pain I have been having for a couple of YEARS now, and after hundreds of dollars, and multiple tests from US, CAT, endoscopy, colonoscopy, and NO answers, I am SO over doctors.

Yes yes and yes!

I don't wish that pain on anyone. I had it for months, bouncing from specialist to specialist saying I had severe chest pain (sternum) that hurt to take deep breaths or lean back even a little. I said it felt as if I had torn a ligament in my chest. Even though constochrondritis is fairly common, it took until a GI dr said, "did this come on after a bad fall? (answer: yes) I think it's a chest wall injury." But even he didn't say anything about rest, ibuprofen, ice packs, etc. I mean it is a joint problem, right?

It still flares up if I do something intense (I mean REALLY intense like last weekend when I walked a 45-mile event carrying a heavy one-shoulder backpack). But it is alleviated with ibuprofen and goes away quickly now, about 1 day or two rather than the months to heal after falling on the stairs which started it all.

Oh and yes, one dr said he felt I had psychosis with imaginary pain. Nice, eh?

I'm hoping the best for you and anyone else with it. I would suggest ibuprofen rather than aspirin to help clear up inflammation.

Spot on! How I wish I had taken ibuprophen during the night! I took some less than an hour ago and am already feeling much better! I thought perhaps I had a dislocation of the rib at the sternum, if that is possible, but haven't been able to find any info with my googles! The reason I thought dislocation was that it was so acute and came on so quickly. Wow, it is SO nice when the pain dies down some, aaaaahhhh, it hit me at appx. 4 pm yesterday, and this is the first time I can say that I have not been in really bad pain. Guess there will be no upper body for me for a few days. This just torques me off. It seems that whenever I get really going on a great tough rotation, something derails me! LOL, hmmmm, do ya suppose my body is deciding to mutiny when I try to work out like a 25 year old?

Redflame, why are you lifting so heavy that you wind up with a severe case of chosto-something or other? Besides that, you don't want to BULK UP now do you?

Sounds kind of odd that it would hit 5 days after a workout. I think I'd err on the side of caution and get it checked. Also, I think gallbladder pain can be a pain that is in the center of your chest.

I would say take some Advil and give it some time (as I tend to try and let the body take care of things itself before plunging into doctor's and medicine) but a 5 day delay in pain after an exercise sounds odd to me.

Hope you get to feeling better soon!!!
