I'm in pretty good shape, but I've never been great at full-body pushups, and my core can always stand some extra attention, so a while ago I challenged myself to a couple fitness challenges I found on Pinterest...pushups and planks, every day doing a few more pushups and holding plank for a little longer.

One night I woke up with my left shoulder screaming in pain. No matter what position I tried, I was in agony. It was almost to the point that I couldn't lift my arm. Miraculously, the next day it was fine. However, I've been shying away from planks and full-body pushups ever since. Never want to go through that again!

Does my experience mean that planks are evil for everyone? Of course not! If it works for you, go for it!

The internet can be a dangerous place.

All things in moderation is my mantra. I will continue doing planks.

I agree with you! Something about the group setting and mindset brings out the worst in us! I have been there . One would think we all could make decisions in our own best interest. Competitive nature of human spirit or stupidity seems to often times yield to "showing up" or "keeping up".

That sounds like a muscle spasm. I had one a couple of weeks ago. Awful pain!

Love this.

Yaya~hope you feel better. Getting injured is no fun. I've been there too with workouts that worked GREAT for others and even helped them rehabilitate. So frustrating.

NuggiesAunt~so very true about the competitive stuff!

LOL!

A quote from the article:

"In the past, I’ve been treated for acute shoulder strain and a back injury from lifting too many weights in the gym, which apparently makes me particularly prone to conditions like costochondritis."

So, she has a history of overdoing exercise. How many times will she have to get hurt (and write about it online) before she discovers moderation?

I lost 107 pounds in the early 1970's doing nothing but straight leg situps. I still do Pilates rollups. Did that set me up for a back injury 30 years later? Who knows? With my spine the way it is I need all the tucking and flexion I can get. Crunches are part of my rehab from PT and Pilates is good for me. Rollups/crunches every day.
