I was diagnosed with costochondritis 15 years ago, it was scary at first, but now that I know how to manage my flare ups. I actually find that weight training helps and the only thing I cannot do is chest presses. I take Motrin when the pain is bad and use a heating pad.

Oh Sherry I'm so sorry to hear this.

I've never had costochondritis but I've had pneumonia and pleurisy (two different winters). SharonNYC suggested I set up a nice high stack of bolsters or pillows and blankets to recline back on, and belt the legs in for supported reclining bound angle pose. I found that it took pressure off the chest wall. That, and child's pose or any other forward bend, especially wide legged forward bend with my head on a block.

It may be entirely different for your situation though. {{HUGS}} I hope it clears up quickly.

ETA: I wonder if warm epsom salt soaks would help?

Pat, thanks so much for suggestions. I will try both-the yoga and epsom salts.
I now have a yoga bolster thanks to a very generous Xmas gift from a VF friend

My mom had it due to complications from bronchitis. She did have antibiotics but I think it depends on the underlying cause as to how they treat it. It does take a couple of weeks at least to get better so take good care of yourself.

Sherry,

I have not had this but I just wanted to say I'm sorry you're dealing with this and I hope it heals quickly for you! It is no fun having illness/injuries and especially when they impact our workouts. Hang in there!

Thanks! You are all so sweet

It just stinks since I have workouts I haven't tried yet, and now they have to wait.

I'm going through this right now, so I literally feel your pain. I got some Motrin and Vicodin for it yesterday, and I was told to take those and ice it.

I forgot to ask: for those who have had this, how long did you wait before working out again? Did you still do lower body workouts? I do a lot of Leslie, and would I be safe doing her workouts without the arm movements?

I had this years and years ago a number of times. Heat and relaxation comes to mind as to what helped the most. Eventually, it went away. I don't remember them giving me antibiotics.
