Angry Paypal is the WORST!

I bought something on Ebay and went to pay with the cash balance in my Paypal account, and Paypal did not let me send the payment, saying I exceeded my "sending limit" on the account. When I called Paypal, the representative said that there was an arbitrary amount that I could send (which includes withdrawing my own cash balance), and that the limit was reached. The only way to get my money out of the Paypal account was to add a bank account or to open a Paypal credit card. I would not do either.

So, after a lot of back-and-forth with customer service, they allowed a "one-time courtesy" to withdraw my cash balance (for a fee).

I am DONE with Paypal!

I have the same problem with paypal.... cannot use it anymore because I reached my limit without connecting a bank account. I refuse to do it.

I only have $25 left in my account. I had no idea that they did this nowadays. That really bites!

Same thing happened to me earlier this year. At first I didn't want to do it. But then I added both a bank account and my own regular credit card info and it isn't actually a big deal because it's easy enough for me to delete that info after making a payment. (And just re-adding prior to a purchase and again deleting - once it's verified the first time it's a very quick process to re-add and you still can choose which method you want to use for payment). I scarcely notice it now and I do like PayPal, so for me it was worth it. It's no different to me than ordering at Amazon, since I don't like to store payment info (same credit card) there either. The bank account I added to PayPal is for a special account with just a small cash balance which I use for this purpose only, since I didn't want to use one of my "real" bank accounts.

Note that when paying for something the default payment method that always comes up first will be the bank account, so you have to make a point of switching to the other method if that's your choice (which it always is for me).

I have a small bank account that I keep for this purpose, too. But I also use a CC with Paypal.

The funniest thing about this (when it first happened to me) was me thinking - Why didn't fellow VFers warn me this might happen??! Lol. I too talked to a PayPal rep and got nowhere. I briefly considered ditching PayPal but I'd never get rid of it. Even now, when my purchases are fewer than they ever used to be. It's just way too convenient.

I resisted for a long time then finally added a small savings account we have. What I do not like now is that account automatically comes up for purchasing so you have to remember to change it for each transaction. I do not know why a credit card would not be sufficent. It feels like so many businesses want as much info on you as possible.

Really? My account isn't associated with a bank account. This hasn't happened to me yet, but now I'm worried that it can occur without warning. Does anyone know what the trigger is--i.e, is it a certain total number of purchases, a number per month/year, or what? And do they count both sending AND receiving money?

I have used PayPal a bit more often of late, as I've made a few purchases off ebay for Christmas. I probably usually only use PP once every couple of months, but it's been a couple times per month recently. Is it possible I could fall under the threshold?

You have a certain $ limit before you have to link to a bank account. I was using a credit card so I do not know about debit cards.
