OT - the cost of flowers

Yikes - I made the mistake of waiting too long to buy a gift for my friend’s birthday (I usually buy things early), so I didn’t have many options seeing how her birthday is tomorrow. I called the local florist in her town who told me she had a pretty hydrangea for $85 plus $15 for delivery. I said, “Do you have a not so pretty one for less?” I don’t think I’ll be buying flowers for anyone anymore. I’m feeling a financial squeeze right now anyway because I just signed up for Medicare and it’s MUCH more expensive than I had anticipated.

I'm sorry to hear that Gams!

I, too, elected to not send my daughter flowers because I gasped at the cost. I spent much less and just mailed her a gift.

I just looked at flowers online yesterday. OMG! Are they hard to come by or something?

Expensive here too - even bunches of flowers at the supermarket are $25, let alone from a florist. One of my DDs likes to get flowers when she does the groceries, but it's getting difficult to justify the cost - both of my DDs have embraced tube pots of plants and enjoy seeing them grow. For flowers, they may have to move to buying packets of seeds!

I sent my mom flowers for her birthday. It was cheaper and more fun for her to have a petite rose bush in a pot rather than cut flowers, so that’s what I went with. I think we’re reverting back to cut flowers from our personal gardens. The fuel costs and inflation have just made it impossible and impractical to purchase cut flowers.

I shudder to think what they cost for weddings. Maybe people are going for silk flowers?

I see posts in Trader Joe's Facebook groups about people ordering and buying wedding flowers there. They have good prices for flowers.

My DS is getting married next year and I've been scared to think of the cost of flowers, well everything really.

Thanks, Sherry. I'll pass on the info about Trader's Joe to DS.

You are welcome! If you talk to.someone there they can help out ahead of time.

I actually got my wedding flowers from Shop Rite in 1993. My mom.and I went into a florist to get prices. We looked at each other, said "thank you" and left. Shop Rite was in the same shopping center. I think they cost about half what the florist was charging. They did a very nice job.
