Figuring body fat percentage

What is with these online calculators? A few nights ago I was reading some stuff on a local tri club site and went to their body fat calculator. It said I was 31% body fat.

I tried to find it again right now, but could only find this one http://www.freeweightloss.com/calculator1.html that said I was 19%.

Both used measurements, but the first used more measurements. My BMI is 20.9 (supposedly  ).

Where do people come up with some of this stuff? It's obviously totally off for me to get two readings that are so different.

I came back at 19% which is low for me. This may be more accurate for apples than pears. I don't have a lot of fat on my waist. It all lives on my thighs.

Yep, I'm definitely a pear too. The other calculator, which I can't find, had hip and forearm measurements as well.

Since my lean muscle mass doesn't change easily (I'm an ectomorph's ectomorph  ), I can usually estimate my body fat percentage reasonably accurately. The most accurate home measure I've found is one which uses a bunch of body part measurements to calculate body composition. The more measurements, the better the estimate from what I've tried.

Someone (here or at YaYas) recommended a site http://www.mybodycomp.com. You have to register, but it is free. This site uses a lot of body measurements to calculate body fat percentages, lean muscle mass, etc. and, in my case, I think it is close. My home calipers (not super great, but at least consistent) show me at 3% less, which I think is too low. I've tried the impedence-based tools (scales, handhelds) and find them to be wa-a-ay off for me. In my tour of various calculators and systems, this measuring method is about as accurate as any.

This website uses 13 measurements, weight and age to determine body fat percentage and RMR. It certainly gave me some motivation - my body fat percentage came out much higher than I expected!

This site put me at higher than I expected too. The skin on my stomach lost its elasticity after a laparoscopy a few years ago, so I don't really trust calipers on me. I wonder how much it would cost for me to do the water displacement method?
