Osteoporosis Question

Is pilates contraindicated for Osteoporosis?

Hi Mandie,

I'm not an expert, but I think some moves may not be great for osteoporosis - like rolling like a ball or rollover. But I think some of the other exercises may be fine.

Rebekah Rotstein is a Pilates instructor who gears some of her instruction to those w/ osteoporosis.

I think it is a good idea to get a list of exercises/postures/positions to avoid and then modify the exercises as needed.

Ones where you lift the head forward with the chin tucked. A Pilates instructor here at VF told me that straining your neck forward isn't necessary to work your core, just keep your head flat on the mat or on a small pillow.

Anything that you feel is taxing your spine unnecessarily unless you're under the eye of a professional instructor.

Other than that, Pilates is an excellent method for bone strength.

And there are at least 2 books on osteoporosis and pilates. One is called Osteo Pilates.

The Classical Pilates group put out a dvd called Classical Pilates with Consideration for the Neck and Back. It's a few years old, but I recommend it,
especially since osteo often affects those areas the most.

PS I have osteopenia and I do Pilates. When I started I was very careful and would back off anything that caused the slightest amount of discomfort. I found that I was able to do more than I thought I could at first. The above dvd is very good. Just take your time and be careful. You are the best judge of what you can handle.
