Question EBE2: Does anyone actually do that weighted kneeling-to-low-squat move?

My jaw fell open when I saw Ingrid do that exercise (which I refer to as the "Call 9-1-1" move). It looks like a recipe for knee disaster!

You can watch it at TotalfitnessDVDS. It is at about 1:49 in to the clip.

I've never seen it in any exercise video before.

BTW, I have this set and do something else at that point!

There's no way I'll be doing that move when I start the rotation. I have youth on my side for a few more years and I'm not even trying to mess up my knees. That move scares me. Insanity taught me enough about taking care of my knees. I avoid strenuous moves.

Ummm, yeah no. I wouldn't be doing that move either. Anything with knees or a knee to the floor and going up to a squat or lunge I avoid. Tracie Long has a move in one of the Stronger Longers where she is in a lunge position but her knee is touching the floor and you go up and down. I don't even do that one and that looks tame compared to what I just saw.

That's what's so nice about modifying, and I do lots of it nowadays!

I'm 46 and got this workout when it first came out last year. I"ve never had knee problems and have no issue doing the move except its damn hard. The check-in group from last year some us started using knee pads like used in MMA. I've done the program twice so far and love it. I was needing a change from Cathe and it is a challenging program.

I never did progress to really heavy weight for that move. I only use 15'

Its basically a body weight exercise and when I started the program I used no weight

I used to do it regularly, but stopped after I injured my knee while running (I twisted my ankle). I continued doing the move for a while, but my knee was getting worse so I decided to stop and never went back to it. My knee did get (mostly) better and I don't know if that exercise was bothering it, but decided that it wasn't worth the risk.

Nope! I've got wonky knees. I do regular squats or lunges.

That looks like a modified version of knee jumps, where you jump from a kneeling position to a squatting position. Mike Donavanik has those in one of his DVDs, and Michael and Janet Jackson did them in their "Scream" video. Anyone who thinks Janet isn't fit, I say "can YOU do that?"

I've tried and failed to do knee jumps ever since seeing that video but I can do that EBE2 modified version. I don't see much use to it though, unless you're trying to work up to the knee jumps.

Yowza. I'm old and creaky (and cranky) enough that I look at a move like that and think how I'd modify: stand, kneel, stand, do two squats; repeat. Unweighted for sure.

Still not great on the knees either, but I just do some surrenders instead.

I do surrenders as well. Not quite so stressful on the knees.
