I'd be most likely to use it for barefoot, low impact cardio. Although if the workout doesn't have mat work, or if I was skipping mat work, I might still just use the bare floor, since I feel like I'm stable there without cushion (grippy socks help a lot though).

I have the Square36 Extra Large Exercise Mat. It's on top of a rug that is on top of a wood floor. I use it for all exercise: cardio, weights and yoga. One of my cats tries to scratch it and doesn't make a dent.

I am in LOVE with my Cathe round mat :-)

I do have an older Mandala round mat on top of it so it’s protected and very cushy

I don't know what I prefer to be honest! I do remember that my knees felt funny sometimes when I used a mat plus carpet. I chatted with customer service and feel pretty good about their satisfaction guarantee. The mat is 25% off right now and if you sign up for emails you get an additional 10% off so I felt like that price was worth the experiment especially if they have a 30-day satisfaction guarantee on their everyday yoga brand products. I think I was figuring that the thinner mat might be better for standing work for me and if I need extra cushion for my butt I can just put a smaller mat on top of it and still not feel like I'm falling off the mat so to speak.

Have you looked into puzzle mats? I work out in an unfinished basement, so I have concrete floors. I have three layers of puzzle mats on mine, you would probably be fine with one layer.

I would consider it if I had a dedicated space. I actually have been enjoying bare floor (laminate) plus grippy socks, I feel like no mat is actually helping me place my feet well and not tweak my knees etc. But I do want to have the ability to do low impact barefoot stuff on a mat even if it's thin, so I can quickly go down for a little floor work if needed without having to get my mat. I do have one for extra cushion if i need it that I can put on top, and I'm hoping it will stay in place on a mat better than it does on bare floor.

I did find it one sale. Unfortunately, I don’t remember where.

In Nov 2020 I asked the same question. One of the wonderful ladies on this forum pointed me to the Gorilla mat. I bought the 7x5 mat and it was $180 at the time. I see they are now on sale for $150 on Amazon. I absolutely love this mat b/c I don't have to keep replacing it like the other cheap mats I used to get at the local sporting goods store that would shred after a few months.

I only wish I had gotten one a little bit bigger than the one I got. For Yoga, it'd be big enough, but for Hiit workouts and such, I'd prefer a bit more room.
Other than that, I have no complaints. If the dogs walk on it with dirty paws, it's easy enough to clean.

My husband bought me something similar 6 years ago:
https://smile.amazon.com/Square36-Ex.../dp/B00MEP0U2W

It use it for everything - cardio, strength, yoga. It works pretty well for general yoga, although if I'm doing more of a vinyasa practice (which I rarely do), sometimes I put a more traditional yoga mat on top.

You can get a glimpse of it in some of my YouTube videos; this one shows quite a bit (it's the large black mat underneath the green/gray patterned yoga mat):
